Ok kids!  This tri is fast approaching.  Anyone done this course before?  I am just curious as to your experiences.  This is going to be my first Oly distanced race.

Aha!!  I would STRONGLY recommend 1) reading everyone else's race reports on this one, 2) reading the website to see whether they solved some of their issues last year, and 3) study the website so you know what to do...seriously - there are two transition areas, and you've gotta know what you're doing....

Also, K_Hase did it and had some pretty vivid memories of this course, if I remember correctly.

IN!!!  I don't care if there is pewp floating past me...

Anyhow, I've done this the past few years.

- 2 transition areas.  Unload your T2 stuff then ride your bike a mile north to the beach, where you set up T1.  Make sure to bring a bad big enough to fit your wetsuit, et al, because they truck this stuff to T2 once everyone is out of the swim. Once you get to the beach, drop your stuff and stand in the line for marking/chipping, THEN set up your bike stuff.  Trust me on this.

- The Olympic is four FULL loops of the island.  So, you exit T1, ride PAST the fountain and around the island.  Once you pass the fountain, that's loop 1.  Many people somehow count the stretch from the beach to the fountain as 1 lap??  Also, as you're coming around the south side by the fountain, make sure to get into the correct lane.  You may get sprinters turning in front of you at the last minute.

Those are the main things to remember.  They had port-o issues last year (they didn't show up at the beach before the start), but Kenny SEEMS like he was all over it.  That was the main problem.

This is also a Greyhound supported race, so you'll see many of us there.

Uhhh, I think everyone will be at HI.

It's easy, tho.  Drive onto the island and the casino (big building) is right in front of you.  Park in the lot directly in front of you and the trasition area is in front of that on the grass.  So, when standing on the grass, face the bridge to get back off the island.  If you go to your right down the road, you'll see the beach area on your left side down approx a mile.

The pedestrian path is the inner lane going around the island.  This and two traffic lanes will be the bike route.

Maybe I can conjure up a map at some point.

ok, it's crude and rude, but I think you get the point.  Right in between the n and o in Casino, you can see a small circle.  This is the fountain.  Transition is just to the right of that in the grass.

I'll be riding it this weekend if anyone wants to join me (its part of a three hour ride...) probably saturday morning leaving by 8 at the latest from Grosse Pointe Park. My plan was to head the other way on Jefferson, out to Metro Beach and make up the extra on Belle Isle, but I can change that and just do loops of Belle Isle and finish out my ride on Lake Shore.

Three hours of the isle might be more than my brain can handle, but I've often done 2 hours-5 laps plus getting there and back equals 2 hours most days, its 37 miles.

I just signed up.  I wasn't going to do it because I don't have a wetsuit but I found a great deal on one.  So, now I own a wetsuit and I am doing Motor City!

I've did this race the first year they had it and again in 2007.  I didn't find that that the two transition areas were all that big of a deal - other then stressing over whether I had all the right stuff at the right one.  The marking area seemed like it was congested but I always bring my own marker and we mark ourselves.  Other then that, everything else is outlined well on the race site.  Good chance to PR on the ride.  Flat and some wind.

Enjoy!
