Few (beginner) questions if anyone can help. Thanks, Jayson First, Hello and welcome to BT. This is a great site for helpful advice w/o condescending attitudes or superiority complexes. That being said.... I want to make sure I understand - Youre scheduled for a triathlon in two weeks and you havent done any triathlon training? That sends up a big red flag to me. What is your fitness level? You said you can run 10k's. but what about distance swimming? How much time have you ridden a bike? Have you ever gone for a run after a bike ride? (known as a BRick) Triathlons require a lot more stamina and mental power than whats needed for just 10k's Look at the training programs on this site. They have a 16 week program to get you ready for your first tri, not two week programs. I dont mean to sound harsh, burst your bubble or talk down to you. Its just a genuine concern for your safety, the safety of your fellow racers and the volunteers. Healthy and fit people have died racing triathlons. Read this. Note: It was his first triathlon too. But, to answer your questions: You may also want to post this in the NJ forum for some local advice. Also call around to your Local Bike Shops (LBS's) and see if they carry tri gear and rent wetsuits. 1) Do you have a bike now, like a mt bike? Some people will do there first tri on a mt bike or hybrid to see if they like it and then get a road bike or a tribike. Renting isnt the best option b/c you want to get some training time in before your race. IMHO, if you dont have a bike, cant borrow one and dont have a lot of $$, look for a used road bike or a mt bike to get you through your first season. If you like the sport then you can upgrade. Do a forum search, many different types of bike are used and you wont look out of place at all. 2) f2r.com or wetsuitrental.com. But check local. You will want to get some practice time in with a wet suit before the race. Some have difficulty breathing (constricted) their first couple of times. And if you rent it today, you wont get it till Friday, possibly Monday of next week. Only giving you 3 days to practice in it 3) look at the training programs on this site, search through the forums and ask more questions. One of the best things to know is NOTHING NEW ON RACE DAY! And it seems, with a race two weeks away, everything will be new to you. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My initial plan was to rent a bike until I found out how much it cost to rent a bike Are you sure your race is wetsuit legal? If so you will want to swim in it a few times before your race. So you'll want to rent it for at least a week, preferrably two. How much are you swimming right now? |

New user![]() | ![]() thanks everyone. I should elaborate on the shape i'm in, granted none of it is "triathlon ready" but I do feel as if I am in good enough shape to give it a shot. Keep in mind i'm not trying to break any records here. I workout 5 days a week weights and cardio, i play semi pro football in the area, am in two basketball leagues, and just completed a 5 mile race in 39 mins. My stamina/cardio is good so now i'd like to tackle this triathlon. I just registered for the event yesterday so I havent received any detailed info but it did say something about a wet suit. Thanks for the info and help, I will research. |

![]() | ![]() Well, not knowing where the event is or what the expected water temp is it's hard to say anything about the wetsuit. Many use them and often your local bike shop will allow you to rent them by the day. You could also rent from www.wetsuitrental.com. Have you done any swimming? I think many people who are in good shape are quite humbled by the swim initially and if you've not done any swimming you might be surprised. Maybe not but get thee in the soon to find out. Like today. I trained for a bike-swim-bike duathlon in 3 weeks (had been cycling for a few months but had no swimming training in years) and while I survived I was very humbled by the open water swim in cooler water (68 degrees) after having already ridden 14 miles. Then I had to go ride again. So, yes, it's possible but it might not be real pleasant. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are in good shape and can run circles around me but how are your biking and swimming abilities and like myself have to do some brick bike to runs to see have that feels and also nothing new on race day my first tri and second tris are both pool swims don't want to go to a open water tri until I get my training down more. Need to get out on the bike and into the water lots before this tri and do some runs after the bike. |

Member ![]() | ![]() Hey, it sounds like you and I are very similar. I just played 3 years semi-pro footbal and started running 5 k's last year. I have my first tri on July 12. I started to seriously train this past week. got on a bike for the first time in yearsvand did 6 miles. Did 14 the next day, didn't feel too bad. The swim is a whole other ball game. Fortunatley the fisrt tri I am in also has an option to do a duathlon ru-swim-run, which I signed up for. I believe I need to give myself some more time in the water. Have another tri sceduled in Sept. Good luck and let me know how you did. |
