Subject: Neck/Vertebrea Pain from Biking or perhaps swimming?
I am new to tri training and have decent endurance for swimming and biking. However, I've noticed that I am very sore/achy in the lower cervical spine area between the vertebrae.  (I had a herniated disc in that area which flared up two years ago, but I don't have the corresponding neck stiffness this time; only pain in between the neck discs).  Is this common among new or even experienced folks who train?  It seems that I'm picking up my head to see the road and I might even be lifting my head up as I turn to breath for air.

Do you have any suggestions?  Frustrating enough, I think I might have to take some time away from swimming/biking to help resolve this issue.  Unfortunately, I disregard the training programs thinking that 15-20  minutes of swimming followed by 30 minutes of biking was not at all rigorous (It is not from an endurance perspective). But, this darn neck/vertebrea  issue is another thing......

I have found that my position on the bike caus(ed) some neck pain.  I found that if I was too scrunched up, ie shoulders directly over my forearms and had to look up all the time, that my neck was sore after even short rides.

My fix was to stretch out a little bit (i have other issues now) but my neck and shoulders feel fine, even on long rides.  I also find that I try not to look up too often.  This is probably not safe, but if I am familiar with a road and I feel like there is a big shoulder and I know whats comming, I try to look down at the white line for about 10 seconds at a time, and just look up to "sight".

For what it is worth, the pool makes everythign feel better... maybe because there is less stress on the body... shoulders not withstanding...

... not an expert, just my experience.

Thank you for the advice.  I wonder if I should switch to a hybrid bike?

I herniated a disc last summer and did the whole stiffness, not able to turn my neck and now that I am training again, I am getting the soreness between vertebra again, but not the locking up.

One other thought, since I am killing time at work...

DO you look up when you swim?  I mean do you pick your head up to the front when you swim?  I find that if I focus on looking at the bottom of the pool directly underneath me, not in fornt of me, it feela a lot better... and faster.

I think I turn and then also lift my head back.  The soreness started with swimming and then seemed to be exacerbated with riding??

Hummm....So this does seem to something experienced by others.  I wonder if I can use a hybrid for a 26 mile bike ride since the soreness is in the cervical, not thoracic or lumbar area?

I would guess it's the bike as holding your head up for long periods hurts my neck as well. My only thought on swimming is that if you are tilting your head when you breathe so that you can see the world from a vertical perspective (like when you are standing up), then that could be messing with your neck. If that's the case try and breathe with 1 eye in the water and one out. That way you're not twisting your neck.

Good luck. Injuries just plain stink.

Thanks. I'll try this technique.  Injuries do stink.

I don't necessarily think a new bike is needed. get your aero bars raised an inch or so. Could make a huge difference.
