Subject: HRM HELP!!! I am so confused!!!!
Okay, I've spent the last few hours surfing the web for information and reviews on HRM's and it has only served to further frustrate me. Foot pods, WIND sensors, GPS enabled, self determining training zones, watches that tell you what to do and when to do it, on and on and blah, blah, blah. So I thought maybe some of you hardcore people on BT could help me spend my money! Warning, I am a noob with HRM's, so be gentle...

I am thinking I want three main things - HR (obviously), GPS, and calories consumed.

I want GPS on it for two reasons on runs - I need to know my pace because I have difficulty gauging it and I need a way to really know how far I've gone. My run sucks and I am hoping to use this along with my heart rate to push myself harder (figure if I chart my run distance vs HR I will be ashamed of myself and push more). I do a lot of training under trees, so hopefully the GPS would work under tree cover.

As for HRM features, I don't know that I need all the fancy computerized help software that I see a lot of in the Polars, do I? I was thinking all I would need is to know my average heart rate, max, and instant heart rate. I would think I could manually determine when to start pushing again when doing HR intervals, or is that a pain?

And then there is the whole calories burned thing. I'd really like to know what I'm burning off in training as I am always hungry and suspect I am not putting in enough compared to what I've burned off. But I've heard and read that the calorie counters on any HRM is suspect.

I also want an interval timer as I do timed intervals on both the bike and the run, but as long as it has a clock on it I could probably manage.

Polar recommended the RS800CX Multi but I am confused on what in the world the G1 WIND sensor is and if I need the foot pod thing. I've read that the foot pod is grossly inaccurate if you don't have a consistent stride which I do NOT have, especially as I run a lot of MTB trails. After looking at the price I wonder if Polar isn't just trying to shove their most expensive item on me. Looked at the FT80, but it sounds so complicated with the software that tells you what to do.

I've also looked at the Garmin 305 and 310. I like the idea of being able to wear the 310 when I swim, but from the sounds of it neither the HRM or GPS will work in the water anyway so what's the point. I've heard the Garmins are great at GPS, but the HRM can be sketchy.

So, after all that, can anybody help point me in the right direction to spend my money?

What's your budget?

With GPS you don't need a footpod (unless you use it on the treadmill)

As for GPS and HR on the swim, as far as I am concerned they are both irrelevant.

For $150 you can get the 305 which does the three things you need very well

$150 retail.
However, if you check the classifieds or craigslist, you may be able to get one for less when people get their 310s.

My budget is $500 only because that is what was originally recommended to me so that is what I saved up for. If I can spend less, great, that is more money towards a set of proper race wheels.

So the 305 isn't wildly inaccurate on it's calorie calculations? I thought I had read that somewhere. How well does the GPS work under trees?

Honestly, calories.... I've never looked at it or cared, so maybe someone else can.  But it's just a plain algorithm, isn't it?  i.e., you ran for 45 minutes, calories burned = "X"

I haven't had any GPS cutout problems in trees.

Calories should not count into the reason to buy a hr or gps.  The truth is they are all just working off an algorithm that doesn't take into account things like your actual metabolism.  It just can't.

That being said, I have had 2 polar HR and love them.  My wife has a  garmin 205.  I will probably go that way for the next one just for the gps.  But both my polars have lasted for years.  1st one 10+ years and the current one (that I use as my bike computer) almost 5.  Polar I think is by far the better Heart Rate monitor, but doesn't tell me pace while running.  So I use my IPod for that.  But that does leave me pretty wired up.

I have a Polar 520I.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 50 with a foot pod and heart rate strap.

I love it.

It gives me actual time, lap times (either by pushing the button or pre-setting to count automatically), speed, distance, cadence, heart rate. When you're finished, you get average speed, cadence, and heart rate (and highs on the heart rate). You can set the watch to alert you to certain highs and lows for either pace or heart rate. Saved data can be wirelessly uploaded.

I have found the foot pod to be extremely accurate and easy to adjust when it's not. (It measures perfectly on the track.) I also have found that I often am more accurate than the GPS-enabled devices.

It is significantly cheaper than the GPS-enabled devices (just about $100) and the wrist "unit" is the size of a normal workout style watch (which is good for me because I have unnaturally small wrists).

You can also purchase, separately, a sensor for the bike that is compatible with this HRM.

Drawbacks are that it is not GPS, you have to scroll through different screens to see the different data, and the memory is limited to about 7 hours.

But I am not as into a lot of the data that many people are, so this particular HRM works great for me.

My 305 works on the bottom floor of a 5 story parking garage provided I get a good signal lock before going underground. As far as calorie calculations go.... what Chris said. You'll already be 350 bucks ahead on your race wheels too!!

I have used Polar and Suunto in the past. Both work well as heart rate monitors. However, the 305 is a totally different animal and I would recommend it highly. The GPS adds so much functionality and usable data that I wouldn't buy anything else. The price drop to $150.00 makes it a simple decision (for me)!

Good Luck!

Where is everybody finding it for $150? The 305 that is. I've found it for 170 a few places. Of course, I don't have a plethora of tri oriented shops that I know of, either...
