The oft debated ,never resolved issue of tri vs road but with a defferent spin (no pun ment)

For a novice the road bike may give more flexibility we are told, -----but is it really that "bad" to ride a tri bike full time( if that is your only bike beside  a mtm bike) and with other road bikers on training rides------ and what is the consensus on hill work since it is a necessary training skill in my geography

No, riding a tri bike allt he time is not "bad." If all you are doing is tris, it may be preferable.

Riding a tri bike with other bikers on training rides depends a lot on your skills and their attitude. When I ride in a group of other cyclists, I'm either off the back, on the side, or in the front pulling, never right on someone's wheel as I would be on a road bike. The groups I ride with are a little more laid back than your normal uptight roadies, and the few that may grumble at the start don't seem to mind sucking my wheel for extended periods.

But if i'm riding with a larger group of unfamiliar roadies, I'll bring my road bike to better fit in.

As far as hill work, if you're racing on hills it's a good idea to be training on hills. Further, if you'll be racing on a tri bike on hills it's a good idea to be training on a tri bike on hills.

I debated this for several months, and started several discussions on this very topic. In the end I opted for a road bike, and have just added clip-on aerobars, and I couldn't be happier.

Where I live/train, I have to say that I don't know any triathletes who just own a tri bike. There are many that have tri bikes, but they all have a road bike aswell, and mainly train on the road bike.
