Subject: Single or double jog stroller

OK, I am on an equipment roll tonight.  For thse who use jog strollers or trailers, what do you think is the upper limit for age/size of child?  I am considering a new one and was thinking about a double stroller. I have a small, almost 3 year old and a 4 month old.  I am thinking that the 3 year old might be too big at this point (he is about 29 lbs and about 36 inches).  I did have an old jog stroller and hated it.  His bike trailer (solo bug) is great and I have been thinking of trading it in for a double as well.  Does anyone have any thoughts?  Oh, my 3 yr old may not even like to stay in a jogger for 30 minutes any more.  Does anyone else take a youngster out with them?

Thanks.

I've got a baby jogger double that I use with a 4 yr. old - 43 lbs. and a 3 yr. old - 33 lbs. They fit in it fine with room for various stuffed animals, sippy cups, snacks, etc...Usually Im the one that's done with it before they are. It's tough work! They are much better at sitting in there while they're occupied or tired. There's still room to grow for both of them but I think mine is a bit wider than most. It doesn't fit through a single doorway - we need double opening doors to get into anywhere.

I have a single jogger that I use with my 3 year old when my 8 year old is in school.
Here is my trick for getting him to last more than 20 minutes:
I do an out- and-back run with something fun at the turnaround point- a lake, an ice cream shop, a park. Then we get out of the jogger and play for 20-30 minutes and run back.
It seems to work well, plus lots and lots of snacks along the way

Go for it. I would just suggest spend the money and get a good one. My little girl is 3 yrs. and 34 lbs.

We bought a BOB's and it was pricey. But, whoa momma its great. We have had 2 others and I just could not run w/ it.

I second the BOB. I have a double BOB stroller and push my 4yr. old and 2yr. old in it pretty frequently. They actually love the stroller, but I always have snacks and water for them. Sometimes they start to push each other's buttons and I have to stop my run and intervene, but usually they have a blast together! It is getting a little harder to push as they get heavier, but it is still doable! Oh...and yes, the BOB is pricey, but it is really worth it! I have a friend that has a cheaper brand (sorry I don't remember the name) and it's really difficult for her to manuvere it. I would suggest "test driving" each stroller with your kiddos in the store and see which one feels comfortable to you! Good luck!

I have the double Chariot and it is fantastic! My 2.5 year old (but my kids are huge - he's about 40lbs and his 6mos old sister is almost 21lbs) has a blast in there. The weight limit is 100lbs. I'm not sure how much fun it will be to run pushing 100lbs, but I'm having no problems right now with 60+, so I guess it will be fine.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Kristin - what stroller do you have?

Jenna - I almost bought a Chariot when I had my first son.  Do you have one that converts from jog stroller to bike trailer (or do they all do that?).  That almost sold me on it the first time, but my SIL gave me her old job stroller and we bought a Trek Solo Bug trailer (which I think is awesome).

We don't have a store that sells jog strollers so I'd be purchasing online (most likely).  I may have friends who have a BOB so I could probably try that out.

Thanks again.

It is a stroller/bike trailer. Actually, it's primarily a bike trailer and then you need a separate jogging stroller conversion kit to make the switch. You can also buy a standard stroller conversion kit, a cross-country skiing conversion kit, and a hiking conversion kit. The hiking kit is pretty cool! It straps on just like a backpack.

I'm backing the double chariot. I run, bike and ski with 2 little ones (3 years and 9 months). It's amazing how much stronger and faster you'll get pulling and pushing them. And the resell value on the chariot is great!!

The Chariots are super expensive.  If I am reading the website correctly, you pay up to about $900 for the chassis and then the conversion kits on top of that.  I was looking at the cross-country models as then seemed to be the most suitable.  I want something predominantly for jogging and secondarily for riding and I cannot really figure out which would be the best one.  Any ideas?  FYI I have many miles of paved rail trail and crushed gravel rail trail to ride and run on.  So I don't need something super-durable.  I am after a fairly light one that is easy to push.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

I have a 5 year old (44lbs) and a 2 year old (31lbs). With my first child I had a cheaper Baby Trend single jogger with a fixed wheel. It did the job okay, I never went farther that 3 mi's with it then. But I hated the fixed wheel. After running in a few local races after my second child I immediately went for the BOB double jogger with a swivel wheel. Handles like a dream, worth every penny if you jog often enough (which it sounds like you do!!), and yet it's not as expensive as some of the other brands...
As for the bike trailer, it's too hot to use here in the summer. But in the winter it's not bad. Occupying their time is the hardest part. Close quarters with 2 kids can be rough for extended periods of time, like a previous post stated, I try to incorporate somewhere fun for them at a midway point, park, etc. It makes it easier and more enjoyable for all of us.... That way I don't turn into the "grumpy mom" before we get home. lol Laughing

We do well with a double jogger (4 year old and 2 year old) but snacks are a vital element. Also, I let them take off their shoes and socks, and my 4yo will brace her heels on the edge and kind of hug her knees. This seems more comfortable than hanging them over the edge for her.

With the double bike trailer, this is a disaster. They are too close together and fight constantly because they are squished. We have two separate ones and occasionally dh and I will take them both out.

Thank you all for your feedback.

Kristin - what stroller do you have? I've got a baby jogger Q series. The Q means it folds easily and quickly - fits right in the back of our Ford Escape w/ some room to spare. It doesnt' have a swivel wheel up front but I dont' miss it. It does drift to the left a bit but Im pretty sure that was due to mommy error in running over something big. Other than that, I love it. Bought it on line - check around b/c there was a pretty big price swing b/tween retailers.
