Subject: Aerobars for HIM?
Hi,

What do aerobars do? I know that's a funny question. But, do they take the pressure off of your shoulders and neck?

I will be doing my first HIM in August and I currently don't have aerobars. I will have them for my IM next year. Would you recommend getting them for my HIM this year or wait. Most of my training has been on a trainer so I don't know how comfortable I would be using them in a short few weeks for a race. However, yesterday on my ride outside my shoulders got really tired.

If I did get them how do I know which ones to get?

Thanks,

Happy training,

Kendra

They do make a big difference but MAKE SURE you get a bike fitting instead of just slapping them on as I did.  Im doing my first IM next month and couldnt ride past 3 hours without discomfort.  I got a fitting about a month ago and it feels like I can ride forever (maybe no fast..but forever).  Anyway, talk to your local shop and have them set you up.  I think mine cost about $140 2 years ago.  Profile design.

If you are going to get them for the IM then you should get them now.  It does take some time to get comfortable on them but you still have a month until Trioka.  IMO aerobars will gain you about 1 to 2 mph over sitting upright.

I finished a HIM a few weeks ago, almost everyone had aerobars. Mine were simple clip ons but well worth the investment. You will find its way more comfortable but will take some getting used to. Its different to balance the bike while tucked in the bars.

Some good advice: Do use aero bars for your HIM but dont show up to your neighborhood group ride with aero bars... its part of the unwritten group ride code.

good luck

Take this "good" advice with a grain of salt .. there are many many group rides are Tri bike friendly. Come to think of it, all the group rides around here are Tri bike friendly. Just dont ride on your aerobars when you're in a paceline unless you're pulling.

To the OP: As mentioned aerobars make you significantly more aerodynamic, but will not help much if you don't get fit for them. If you do not have enough time to do that before your HIM then wait until after to pursue them. But definitely get them. Those plus an aero helmet are prob the best bang for your buck to get more aero.

When I used to live and ride in Jersey I showed up a couple times with them still on and always had a few people make some comments about "I hope you don't plan on using those today".  I understand their concern because if someone did get on them in a paceline you're asking for a complete disaster, but it was always said with a little bit of a snide comment and you could sense their annoyance that I even had them on there.

I live in Colorado now and there's a number of us that show up with ours still on.  Out here the attitude towards them is much different, instead of the snide comments it's typically a friendly "What triathlons are you doing this year?"

That "unwritten rule" always annoyed me.  I ride 5 days a week, only 2 of those days are with a group, it's a hassle to be taking them on and off and making sure they are always put back on at the same angle.  I stopped showing up to that group in NJ because of their comments.  If they have lights on their bike ask them why they don't take them off when they ride during the day? or if they have two bottle holders and only one bottle, ask why they don't take the empty cage off their bike since their not going to use it today?

oh, those people annoy me!

/////// end of rant ///////

sorry.

If you don't know what aerobars are for, you may want to get some more training/ time in the sport first. (Not meant to knock you or anything)
