Subject: comfort in aero position
I just purchased a new tri bike and was expertly fitted for it at my local bike shop. I have found the aero position hard on my neck and "taint'. My question is what is normal and what could require some adjusting on the bike. I have no reference point since I have never been in the aero position. If it is normal to be in a bit of "pain" until I get used to it then I will continue to ride it as is. Any commentary would be appreciated.
Thanks
David

Congrats on the new bike. Aero position is interesting for a little while til you get used to it. What kind of shorts do you wear? I use Canari gel padded cycling shorts, and they work out awesome. Also, the saddle is pretty important. There are a variety, but there are tri specific saddles made for more comfort in aero.

Other than that it will take some time to get used to it, but if it continues through the rest of the season, I might consider a new saddle, shorts, or bike fit.

There was a post from someone (not sure who) on another topic a few days ago that I found helped this on my last ride out, try to relax your shoulders, I was riding with my head up and my shoulders almost locked, not only was my neck sore from looking up from such a forward position but also my shoulders being so tight.  Perhaps try to really relax your shoulders when you're in the aero position if you're riding with tight shoulders, helped me this week.

The quick answer is, you will get used to it.  I had the same pain in my neck when I got my tri bike in December, but my neck got used to it after a month or two.  As far as the seat goes, tri bikes put more pressure on this area than road bikes do because your hips are rolled forward some.  It makes selection of shorts and a seat more critical.  Glide seems to help to by reducing friction between your skin and shorts.  If that doesn't work or if you are still in some sort of pain after 500-600 miles of riding, you may need to go back to the fitter and explain what your issues are.

I ended up swapping out my Profile Design Tri saddle that came with my bike, never could get comfortable in the aero position with that saddle.  I use an Adamo Road saddle now and it's improved my comfort level quite a bit.  The neck pain just takes getting used to, you have to get the muscles in your neck used to the new position, it'll pass with time.

How much pain?  A little pain is expected.  There is a period during which you will need to become acclimated.  Muscles that you are not used to using will need to be built up.  If you're like me, I have to take a few hundred miles each year to get "used" to riding in aero again.  But, don't press it too long.   I find  that triathletes will put themselves through a lot of unecessary pain on the bike trying to get used to a position when they need a simple adjustment or two.  The first fit isn't usually your only fit.  Go back and talk to the LBS and get their thoughts, too.

Speaking of seats, I have always ended up replacing the stock seat on any new bike.  Not because they were bad seats, but because they were bad seats for me.  Your LBS should allow you to try different seats.

like everything it takes getting used to.

but your bike fitting if done well puts you in the most aerodynamic postion that still allows you max power output.  since you are human (i am resuming) you may need some mosifications to fit your needs.

most fitters charge $150 so if you paid 'em and after riding a number of hours, it still doesn't feel right.  go back and let them know.  they should help with adjustments without an additional charge.

x's 10! I struggled a lot but now find my road bike (& even MTB) to be uncomfortably slow. Also, mix up your seating arrangements. Switch-off between you ' bones' & a more forward aggressive stance. But for sure, chill on the shoulders!
