Subject: Do I really need "running" shoes
I am reading my new training program (from the beinnertriathlete site - the Conservative Couch to 5K program) and it suggest to get fitted for proper running shoes first.  Do I really need to have "running" shoes?  I have a couple pairs of shoes I used to work out in:

I have a pair of New Balance - WT570BB, which are technically outdoor trail shoes and another New Balance pair of shoes I think are training shoes (WT474PB).

Are these acceptable to use for this program since I am walking and running?  I "can" go buy a new pair of running shoes (and of course I will after a month or two) but I want to start now and can't buy a new pair of shoes.

I am no familiar with those model shoes you have but YES, you wan shoes designed for running as opposed to cross trainer or aerobic shoes.  The support is different and the wrong style shoe can cause injuries.

Wear what you are comfortable running in.

Both of those shoes are considered running shoes, but are "trail" running shoes.  I didn't know if there is a difference.  I am very much a beginner, so my routine is going to be walking ONLY for the first month, then gradually adding a few minutes of running into each workout.

So, I was curious if using a running shoe for walking is appropriate?

You don't have to spend a lot of money and your feet will love you for it.

So you mean that by getting a running shoe, that is the best for my feet?  I will be only walking for the next month.  Are running shoes good for this?

Running shoes are fine for walking.  It will give your shoes and feet a chance to get used to each other.  Make sure you get a running shoe that works with your arch type and degree of pronation.  The shoe advisor from Saucony is helpful.

get shoes that are right for you - it is worth the $100 investment to not be in pain while running.

My suggestion would be to not only get good running shoes, but also go to an actual "runners" store where they can fit you to the RIGHT running shoe based upon your level of pronation, how you run, etc. The better ones have treadmills with cameras. (similar to the post above, but find a reliable/recommended/knowlegeable store in your area and get the right shoe the first time). You will avoid injuries down the line and save yourself a lot of time and pain (and money...if you end up buying the wrong shoes and hate them!).

Then, be sure to replace them about every 6 months or 400 miles or so.

Otherwise, you risk injuries. Ask me how I know.

Per the running shoe v. walking shoe questions: I would think a running shoe is fine for walking, but not the other way around. If the shoe can withstand/support given the impacts of running, then it can do so for walking. The only downside would probably be that it could be "more" of a shoe than what you really need, but from an injury prevention standpoint it should be fine.

VERY good point, about the running shoe being ok for walking.  I think by the time (in 4 weeks from now) I am actually ONLY walking in my training program, so that gives me some time.  I think the shoes I have are actual running shoes, but I will bring them into the store when I go for a fitting.  I have found a store in my area that can fit me and specializes in running shoes, so that's awesome.  I will head over there in the next two or three weeks.....and hope they have wide shoes that fit.

I really do NOT want an injury, so I am totally ready to buy the right shoes, especially since I already have feet issues (I have plantar fasciitis).

Thanks for all the helpful replies!

You can wear running shoes for walking, but it should be the correct shoe for you.  My husband began a walking for fitness porgram 5 months ago.  At first he was just using the old walking style shoes he had around.  His back hurt, knees ached, ankles etc... Went to the running store were I buy my shoes and they fit him with a running shoe.  Turns out he over pronates and needed a stability shoe.  Been walking pain free ever since and will be getting his second pair of shoes soon.
