I just watched the HiVee Tri Championship on NBC and not only was there drafting on the bike, they were riding peleton style.  Is this a new development or just something this tri does?

The Hy-Vee pro triathlon that you saw was an ITU event.  ITU events are draft legal.  The age group triathlon the day after was not draft legal.

Is it an ITU race? Some of those are draft-legal (if not all? dunno)

If you notice they ride regular road bikes with very short aerobars to make it safer to ride in a pack

ITU "championships" are all draft legal.  They also always have those platform swim starts.  I think the NBColympics website has several tris on there from last year if the site is still up.  They had a lot of ITU events on there.

I noticed that it's a completely different game.  The fast runners have the best advantage without a doubt because they can slipstream the whole swim, suck wheel the whole ride, and then blast everyone with their run.

It's not worse, just different.

Laura Bennett who finished 14th at the Hyvee this time and 4th at the Beijing olympics is originaly from here and her whole family (father and 12 year old niece included) trains with my club group.  She said those people in the ITU only do ITU stuff because they'd have to retrain to get back on a regular tri bike.

I wouldn't want to participate in a draft-legal race.  But I gotta say, I really enjoy watching the ITU races with all the close contact between the athletes.

Not necessarily (I mean as far as they do only ITU stuff)...quite a few of the bigger names in the HyVee race are coming next weekend to Mpls for the oly tri that Lifetime Fitness puts on (USAT sanctioned event)...Greg and Laura Bennett, Emma Snowsill, Sara McLarty, Jodie Swallow, Simon Whitfield, Humter Kemper.
