Subject: Easy mid-august MA sprint tris?
My fiancee and I are moving to Boston in a little over a week. She's looking to her first Tri, and it'll be my 4th. I'm a clyde, and I'm still working on anything more than small rolling hills (pretty terrible on them so far). Shes still working on the bike, and is currently saddled with a mountain bike to ride in any race we'd do prior to late september.

Anyone have any suggestions for a say mid-august sprint tri, preferably with a low entry fee that would be a good start for her, and relatively flat for me? I can find races, just not enough knowledge of the areas to know the terrain.

Thanks!

Hi,

An early August Sprint Tri is the Witch City Tri in Salem. Firm racing is hosting the event so check out www.firm-racing.com. It is scheduled for August 2nd.

I chose this tri because it is local, but it might be just the thing for you two.

I'm the fiance.
Keep in mind too that neither one of us has wetsuits, so if the water is going to be freezing. I don't know much about the area either. All I know is ocean water that far north tends to be a bit chilly

Hi fiance.  Welcome to BT.  The Cranberry Sprint is a new race the last weekend in August.  They have an Olympic that they do every year and is the unofficial MA BT race.  I swam the lake last year without a wetsuit.  Temp is about 75 degrees.  Mostly flat course.

Don't say the word Olympic around her. She has no self control for doing distance and next thing I'll hear is "we can do that for my first race! You're ready to swim that far" and I'll be screwed. LOL.

The Cranberry sprint actually seems like it might be a really good fit! We'll have to look into it.

I forgot to mention you can actually stand up in part of the lake, if you are nervous.  Some people don't like it, but I don't mind.  Where are you guys moving to?

Nerves isnt the issue. Distance is. For her, it's the bike, for me it's the swim. I've done 750M open water, but moving up to a half mile is a big step for me. Being a clyde I'm slow. For her, it'd be 30 miles on the bike. But the sprint would be perfect I think. Assuming it fits her schedule.

moving to BU's campus, between the Charles and Comm Ave.

you can rent wetsuits from Fast Splits in Newton - and they will even discount towards purchase of wetsuits  if when you get hooked

I'm going to have to abstain from a wetsuit for a while. They dont make them in my size, which is probably a good thing LOL.
