I am getting new pedals. The choice is between Shimano 105 platform pedals and the Look Keo Classics, also platforms. The new 105s are about $30 cheaper and are of metallic base rather than the plastic type of the Classics. Shimano hasn't made the platforms for the 105 series just the Dura Ace, my bike shop says that they are brand new. However, it has been mentioned through the grape vine that the Look Classics have had problems cracking. Anyone have an opinion?

Yeah, get metal pedals. They'll be cheaper in the long run.

I have the Shimano 105's and haven't had any problems after ~1000miles if that's any help.

I have the Look Keo Carbon.  Look had a voluntary recall on several models of Keo pedals last year because some riders broke the pedal axle.   It was a pretty rare event but, if you were pedalling really hard, a broken pedal could be a really bad thing.  Look replaced the axles for all affected models for free.  Interestingly, the pedals were marked with production dates so that they could isolate the affected models.  I have two sets were in the recall.  I had probably 3000 miles on one set and probably less than 500 on the other.  I have not had any problems of any sort with them., breaking or other.  I think you could buy either brand.  The Look carbons are a bit lighter.

Cool thanks. It was mentioned that with the lower end pedals that the rear part of the pedal cracked, not the axles area. Not sure if this is the same issue or not, maybe through the grape vine the message became construed. Thanks for the input.

I have Look Keo pedals on both of my bikes and have had no problems whatsoever.  The are not the carbon pedals, but one step below.  That's all I can tell you about which model they are.  'Course, I am a lighter rider at around 150lbs. and I have to admit, it's not like I can put out 500 watts either.  Truthfully, I could probably use just about anything.
