My gears change on their own randomly while riding.  Mostly while I am climbing a hill or putting extra pressure on the pedals.  Any ideas?  I suspect is has something to do with a derailer, but have no clue how to fix it.

Thanks.

There are some good instructional videos on youtube about how to adjust your components. I'm new to working on bikes and the videos have been good enough to save me from making trips to my LBS. I find that starting from scratch and doing each step of the set up process each time will save you a lot of headaches.

Good luck.

Sheldon Brown offers a possible explanation for automatic upshifting.

How old is your chain? Is it worn (stretched out)? I find I start to get auto shifting as my chain is getting old and stretching out. Happens more on my Cyclocross bike than my road or Tri bike (which makes sense as the Cross bike has a more flexible frame). The barrel adjuster should sort this out, if not, then check your chain wear and how old is you cable guide back there? I've had to replace mine before to correct this problem when the cable guide was worn.
