Anyone else doing Tri del Sol on the 18th?  This is my home course as I live on the lake where this is located.  This was my very first tri last year and I am hoping for a much better result this go around.

I'll be there with you.  Similar to you last year, this will be my first tri.  I did a practice run back in June over the entire course, and felt better that I could actually do this.  All I need to do is get through the swim.

This is a very good race and I love that lake.  Last year it was hovering near the 78 degree mark and at the last minute was made wetsuit legal although i swear that water was at least 80 - it was really warm.  I am headed over to WI for the Spirit of Racine HIM so not doing it this year but would definitely say its a good race.

The bike course is packed on the out and back and traffic can be a problem - at least it was for me last year - there was no room for cars to get around which made passing tough for awhile especially since the mens waves went off after the women - it was a little tight for awhile.

Another very competitive race on the west side.

I will be doing it. This was my 2nd tri last year. I'm hoping to beat last year but I don't "think" I will

I tried to get them to change the bike course as my normal ride loop is much nicer and is not an out and back.

I am very confident that the race will be wetsuit legal this year.  Water temperatures are in the low 70s, its cold getting in without a wetsuit.

Craig, thanks for the info on both the bike and swim.  I guess I figured the race officials might try to limit the traffic, seeing that there really isn't any shoulders on the road for some of the bike course.  I heard they have police at the Patterson intersection to allow the cyclists to ride straight through, correct?

When I did my practice swim there a couple weeks ago, the week of was when we had all thos very warm days and nights.  The water was nice and warm.  Not looking forward to a cold lake seeing that I don't have a wetsuit.

Yes, there are people at every intersection so you don't need to stop but the roads are open to traffic so yes passing can be a bit tough.

As for the swim, you will be fine with no wetsuit.  You might just want to take a warm up swim to get used to the water.

Do they still have the beginners swim heat?  I swam that one last year, it was nice as it was not crowded at all so if you are nervous about the swim you might want to consider that.

I e-mailed the RD to ask him that because 2 friends of mine were in that heat last year (their first tri) and suggested I get in that heat.  According to the RD, they didn't get the kind of results / feedback out of the beginner heat as they expected, so they didn't do it this year.  I was a little lost at his response, thinking "What kind of results were you expecting?"  So, I guess I'm just going off with my AG (36-40).

I am assuming the RD meant that not many people went off in the beginner heat to make it worth while but not sure.  The waves last year were not very big (that I could see from the few in front of mine).  I maybe had 50 people in my wave which is much less than most.  If you stay to the outside you should be fine and have open water.

There were a good number of people in the beginners wave, probably 15 or so and we started with the last men's wave which was the last wave of the day.  Not sure what they meant by feedback as nobody asked me what I thought of it.  Of the 4 tris that I have done, that was by far the easiest swim as I never even touched another swimmer the whole time.  I do agree though, the ag waves are not that big so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.  One suggestion though is that there are a lot of people warming up for Steelhead doing this so last year it felt like a fast field.  That being said, it would make sense to start towards the back if you don't feel like you are a fast swimmer.  Trust me, thats where I will be.

No doubt in my mind that I'll be in the back and to the side opposite the first buoy.  I am looking forward to it.

I'll be there too. Not because of not wanting to get beat up though. Just to get a cleaner line to the first turn. My last two tri's I have been in the top 20 out of the water and I'm sure that if I was not right in the middle of that mess I could be faster. So, I'm going to try the swim farther and not have to deal with so many bodies to see if I am faster.

I've been keeping a close eye on the weather for Saturday.  For someone like me that intends on racing w/o a wetsuit, I'm a little concerned with lows in the lower 50s and highs only in the low 70s.  To me that looks like a sure fire way to lower the water temp.  Maybe I need to consider renting a wetsuit for the day.

The tri I did on the 4th the water was 68* I did not use my wetsuit and it was just fine. So I'm thinking that as long as it's 65+ I wont use the suit
