Alright, I gotta share this with somebody and my wife and co workers are tired of hearing about my workouts.

For about two years now (with varing levels of commitment), I've been trying to get my 1 mile time down to under 7 minutes.  Last night, I was able to get my four laps in at 6:58!  I know that's not fast by a lot of standards, but I was thrilled. Negative splits even, and I never do that. Awesome feeling to finally get there.  That being said, the next mile would not have been pretty if I had timed that one!

Ties into my question, as part of my Oly training, I'm supposed to be doing on a given week 18 :30 intervals at RPE 8 or 9.  Does it work to sub in a timed one mile like that at RPE 7 or 8 and then do, say 8 :30 intervals or am I shorting myself by doing that?  Or worst, setting myself up for injury by going that far at a hard pace?

Congrats!

To your question:  I'd say 'no'.  Those are two different workouts, that will do slightly different things for you.  Injury?  Depends on your fitness and conditioning, of course.  Hard to say.  If you can handle one of those workouts, I'd suggest you can probably handle either of them.
