Since I just started training and I signed up at the dublin rec center yesterday to work on swimming. I am thinking a sprint tri should be in my sites for early 2010 but I wanted to see what others think. I am going to go watch the one at deer creek as that is right by my parents house.

I raced Deer Creek In June and It was my first ever race. And I loved it. Perfect Distance Perfect Place to have a race. Just all around perfect. I would highly suggest Deer creek as your first race.

Deer Creek was also my first race.  It would be an excellent race to see, plus HFP put a good race together.  I'll be there again in the fall to see how much I've progressed this season, plus to settle a little competition.

Deer Creek (sep 2007) was my first race (duathlon).  I live nearby.  I like the event and the same sprint couse is offered twice a year (June and Sep).

Good luck.  Do it in September.  I started running on 7/20/2007 and biking on 8/15/2007 and did my first one there on 9/27/2007.  If your swimming is not ready yet do the du.

I am more worried about the running over anything else, I have swam before although not a half mile. I am a member of the dublin rec center so I am going to be banging out some swimming 2 or 3 times a week hopefully. I plan on practicing open water swimming at deer creek a couple times a month. I am mostly nervous about running, my tibia/shins get sore when I run which I am sure is based on my weight and having a bad knee for some time. I think I have overcompensated and need to retrain my foot and leg on the form of running. I just dont want to rush it this year and get hurt.

No worries on the shins. I had the worst case of shin splints going into my training and now after I have been running for awhile now They dont bother me at all. All you need to do is build more muscle in your shins.... I also have horrible knees. I have had both meniscus taken out of both needs due to injury and I have no problems at all. My life saver is Fish Oil....As far as the 1/2 mile swim it really isnt as bad as you think. I was worried about it as well and it went so smooth. I swam it in 14min 3rd in my age group... And it was my first OWS ever.....You could so be ready for Deer Creek in Sept....If you focus on building some running endurance it will all fall in place very nice.

I am definitely considering it, I just dont want to commit yet. I start grad school on 9/14 and I dont want to overwhelm myself. Plus I am not sure if I have all the gear to run one at this point. I am still going to train 5 days a week doing weightlifting, biking, swimming and running. I am just trying to run more than anything else right now.

a tri is doable for you in Sep 09

it is true that as you start to run more your shin splints usually get better.

plan walks in your runs.  if by the time of the race run can't run a 5k after swimming and biking - WALK.

or at least plan to walk portions of the run.

you will make faster fitness gains by having a race goal and when 2010 comes around you will already be an experienced triathlete.

You know, when you pay for a race, you are no longer working out, your training.  Go for it, you will surprise yourself, September 24 is about 9 weeks away, and if you train smart, you will more then ready to cross the finish line.

I may have to do it, a clydesdale on a mountain bike should be interesting. I will keep everyone posted on when I get signed up and my trianing goals. I am going to update the log now. What types of gear should I get for the swimming portion of it? I dont have a tri suit or any of that. Nor do I really have the money for it.

You really dont need alot for a tri.  For the swim: googles and shorts, bike: helmet and bike, run: shoes.  Thats it.  if you want to splurge and add some wants: tri shorts, you can find all over the web for under $50 and you can swim, bike, and run in them.  Body glide or some kind on anti chafe cream really should be under the need portion.  Yes this sport can be expensive, but you can do without alot of the fancy stuff.

So I have decided that I am going to go for it. Mountain bike and all, I plan on getting a road bike w/ my tax return so I just want to finish this one. I am going to register as soon as I have the extra funds (wife and kid are expensive). She is nervoous about me doing it for some reason but it puts a fire under me to train harder to make sure I don't embarrass myself. I am excited and ready to take the plunge. Off to the pool tonight to work on swimming again.

So it appears I have found my biggest obstacle for completing this and I must say it is a surprise. My wife is totally against it. I am not morbidly obese and in bad health but just a little overweight and out of shape. It is going to be tough w/ no support but it just gets under my skin and I now have more to prove it seems. Anyone have any tips on how to overcome this or experienced this? She never really supports me and is a safety freak who worries about everything and does everything to avoid danger (which drives me nuts).

That's rough.  My wife was actually the one who came up with the idea and talked me into doing one with her.  Maybe get her involved in one of the sports?  Neither of us are very good at any of the sports, but my wife and I go swimming together so even though we swim at different paces we can be in the same lane and chat at the end of sets.  We bike and run on our own normally.

What's her real objection?  Hehe, what's the objection behind the objection?

I say go for it.  My husband looked at me like I was crazy in the beginning.  Then 6 months later realized the pizza was much, much better when I started loosing weight....

It made him feel much better when I started riding with an id tag.

My wife said to me that she wanted me to get a physical, so I got a physical got a clean bill of health and she felt better. She to worries about me on long rides or long hot runs.... My 2 cents is, show your wife how it is helping you, stay motivated at the sport and she will come around. When I first started my wife was not to keen on the idea she was worried, but now she is one of my number 1 supporters. Give her time she will come around...

Improving your health also benefits her as well.  Why is she so against this? Money? Time away for training?

I am not sure at all honestly. She thinks I am going to hurt myself or something. Since our daughter was born she has became way overprotective. I am hoping it just wears off because it gets frustrating. I feel great now that I am trianing and I am trying to get her involved and she will run on occaision.
