Subject: crank question

Hi,

I am looking for some advice and opinions . I got my wife a Scott Contessa a few months ago , it's a triple with 105 components.
At almost every ride she is popping her chain, and the LBS can't find any issues other than her cross chaining.
Would I be better off getting her a compact crank , and then how much is involved typically with that, is it just a new crank and chain?

Other than her cross chaining? Isn't that like, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play"? Tell her to quit cross chaining.

To answer your question, new crankset, new bottom bracket (probably), and a new chain if hers is still broken.

First of all, please define "popping" the chain.  Is the chain breaking, or just dropping off the chainring?  If dropping, is it inside, outside or both?

I slightly disagree with Bear--I think it's more like "Doctor, it hurts when I lift my arm like this.  What should I do?"  "Well, don't lift your arm like that."

I've never ridden a triple, but it seems like crosschaining would be even more likely with a double (compact or standard) than with a triple.  I don't think a different crank will help.

Cross-chaining shouldn't even be that big an issue. Again, you need to define "popping the chain" in order to better diagnose what's going on with the bike.

Thanks for the responses !
I meant that when she shifts gears the chain comes off the ring in the front, it usually happens when she shifts from the middle ring to the small on the front

It sounds like her front derailleur is out of tune. The LBS should be able to fix her inner limit setting and prevent this from occurring again.

It sounds like it should be the front derailleur limit stop, but I'm sure that's the first thing the shop would have checked.

When that happens, if she immediately shifts back to the middle or big ring and keeps pedaling, there's a good chance that the chain will pop back on.
