Subject: Another beginner bike question
Hello out there,

I need your advice. I had a hybrid mountain bike (the kind you buy at a big sporting good store) for years and years that I never rode - so just this spring I sold it to a friend. Then about a month later I got a bug in me to try a sprint tri! Of course, now I have no bike. Contrary to what seems to be the beginner's biggest hurdle, I am not worried about the swim portion at all, but am nervous about biking - just not that experienced at it.

My question is two-fold:
1) Do you have advice on how to stop kicking myself for selling my bike and then deciding I need it? The irony of it just keeps me up at  night.
2) Since I really don't know much about biking, is it worth getting a road bike (which seem to be much more expensive) than another cheap hybrid?

Thanks!

What's done is done PLUS, you have a great excuse to get another bike.

If I were you, I'd go for a road bike. They are going to probably be faster than a hybrid but you'll need to work a bit more on your handling skills. I think a road bike will give you more of an opportunity to grow into the sport than buying another hybrid.

Check craigslist/ebay and see if you can buy a bike and become someone's future mistake for selling their bike to you on the cheap

The question is, how serious are you about cycling. What are your goals/ambition.

To somebody that spends hours every week in the saddle, a $3k + top end bike can be a great investment. To somebody who will sit it in the garage and forget about it, a $200 bike is a terrible investment. Nobody can answer what is best for you or your situation.

but to answer shortly...
...IF you want to really do some tri's/race scenario rides, A hybrid won't be sufficient for long.

Good luck!

You are so right. I guess I just needed to hear someone say it. My friends and family think I am crazy, but I feel very excited about training again and am looking forward to trying a new challenge.

Thanks for the words of wisdom! I will commence serious bike shopping.
