Subject: Not a fan of Route 9W
So in an effort to get in a ride outside the city, I drove across the GW and up Route 9W, a route that seems to be held in high regard among NYC area riders. After continuing a few miles north through Fort Lee I parked at a school and rode north. In truth, for about 10 miles it is quite nice, there's a very wide shoulder and some good hills, though traffic does still move quite quick and the memorial to a killed cyclist on the roadside was a little troubling.

However, once we crossed a bridge into Sparkill, it became quite dangerous and nearly unridable. Shoulder disappeared, traffic increased dramatically and the road became a mess. The 2 or 3 feet on the side of the road that you would expect to ride on looked more like something that a drunk person with a jackhammer had some fun with.

Eventually when we hit Nyack, after an uncomfortable cruise over 287, we turned around. There are some great hills on the early part of 9W where we got some good work. In reality you could have a great 20 mile loop, up north then back south, but I'd never recommend anyone ride over the GW Bridge, up a very urban Route 9W through Fort Lee to get to a decent stretch of road.

Maybe more experienced riders won't mind the ride as much, but in the more northern stretches of the road I never felt comfortable and couldn't get any kind of ride going. Instead we ended driving farther out into NJ where I knew some better roads.

I'm surprised so many people seem to talk so highly of this stretch of road, though we did see several bikers on the better part of the road. Curious to hear other people's thoughts or suggestions.

I don't think 9W is great, I think it's convenient and what we're stuck with if we want to get in longer rides near NYC. I've been riding on it for 6 years so I'm comfortable with the traffic and conditions so maybe it just takes getting used to. If I had a car there is no way I'd choose 9W though, I'd definitely go elsewhere.

But to address some of your specific comments. Yes, the conditions around 287 are absolutely atrocious and you should not ride there. You need to turn on Rockland Rd or Piermont Ave and take Piermont/River Rd into and through Nyack, where you can safely reconnect with 9W. This will keep you off that nasty, potholey section where you are forced to ride on that overpass with the huge gaps in the bridge. It's only about 18 miles from the base of the bridge to Nyack and back though so for longer rides, going further is needed. And I'll be honest, there are some dicey sections up there too. I was in terrible traffic in Haverstraw yesterday and there is absolutely no shoulder. You have to ride carefully and be very alert.

There are some routes through Bergen County that will drop you back onto 9W near Rockland Lake and you can approach Nyack from the north, then ride south back to Ft Lee, but you need GPS or need to be handy with a map/turn sheet.

So I think you are absolutely correct. It's nothing to write home about, but if you're training for anything longer than an oly, there just isn't much choice so I think most of us are just happy to have a place to ride that isn't in the city limits.

I've asked this before, does anyone know of an alternative to 9w?

The North Fork of LI is really nice--Riverhead to Orient Point. Problem is, you have to drive there. There's a greenway along the Belt Parkway that starts in Sheepshead Bay that's really scenic and nice, but it's not that long. If you're looking for a 50-100 mile ride, there aren't many options.

If you have a car your options are unlimited. I have rented and driven up to New Paltz, for example, but can't make that a regular thing. If you're not driving, 9W is your best bet and while it's not ideal, we're lucky to even have that.

take a train to Scarsdale or White Plains on the Harlem line. The riding options are limitless in Westchester. Or take a train to Greenwich. The roads in Northern Greenwich are paved with gold compared to 9W.

I would suggest similarly to get a train to Southport or Westport in CT. Be sure to stay off Rte 7 and Rte 1 but there are plenty of great roads heading north that can give you as long a loop as you wish. One potential ride is here - not a great map:

The main routes north are 136, Lyons Plain, Valley Forge, 53, 58. You can also use some paralleling side roads to get off these roads for some really quiet traffic-free roads.

If you are in Westport, be sure to ride by (and stop) at Crumbs for cupcakes and coffee!

If you plan on riding the above loop "(The main routes north are 136, Lyons Plain, Valley Forge, 53, 58.)" , be ready for hills...lots of hills, that is our weekly ride and has quite a bit of climbing, at least from the direction i go, South to North and back.

good luck!!

Anyone plan on riding up 9W on Saturday and looking for company?  With the park road under construction I figured I should broaden my horizons and give the GW/9W route a shot.  I've never done it and I thought it might go easier with someone who has.

Just so you know, and I don't slow you down if you're a faster rider, I average ~ 17-19 mph in the park.

Have not been in the city for a couple of weeks. Whats going on in the park? I assume you are talking about Central Park?

They're repaving the Central Park loop right now.  I was there on Tuesday and the stretch behind the museum was all torn up which made for a not so nice ride.  The good thing is that the parts that they have completed are great.

Ok. Now that I think about it, there was some work being done right before the NYC Tri. This must be an extension of that. Thanks

They tear a section of road up Monday & Tuesday night and then resurface Wednesday & Thursday night so if they get everything done the loop is fine to ride Friday thru Monday. They do only guarantee that the resurfacing will be done by early Saturday morning if the weather is bad. It is going to be this way until sometime in September as they are working along the East side to 110th St.
