Subject: what kind of durability should i really expect from my shoes?
So, I know that the rule of thumb for running shoe replacement is "every 300-500 miles."  I've been ramping up my run mileage from the 10-15 mpw category up to the 16-20 mpw category; I usually run 4 days a week.  So I would expect that I would probably need new running shoes every 4-6 months.  I am also on the heavy side for a woman who runs (although I've been steadily losing weight, so right now I weigh about 148 lbs.), which would mean that my shoes would tend to wear down more quickly.

However... I have had my running shoes for about 2 months.  I have only put about 120 miles on them.  They are already showing significant wear in the heel and the forefoot, and the cushioning is shot.  I'm really mad about this, especially since these are not el cheapo no-name running shoes -- they're $130 shoes that I went to the LRS specifically to buy, therefore spending a bit more money than I wanted to in the name of helping the LRS stay open.

Am I justified in my annoyance?  Is it possible that I have a defective pair of shoes?  Should I just HTFU and buy another pair of running shoes, trusting that the amount it cuts into my grocery budget will help me lose more weight so maybe my next pair of shoes will not wear out so fast?

My running shoes looked pretty rough at the same point, but I still got close to 400 out of them.  Around 150 or so I switched to a new insole and it made a big difference.

Did you buy racing shoes from the running store or more of a training variety?  Some people use "race flats" which wear out much quicker than a training running shoe.  I've been using Brooks Glycerin 6 shoes and my last pair lasted me ~350 miles before I started to experience some knee pains.  All pains went away when I put on the new pair.  For reference, I'm a guy ~150#.

A couple of years ago I was 5'11" and 225 #'s and I couldn't get 200 miles out of a pair of shoes before frontal knee pain began.  I am down to 185 #'s and notice that I get over 300 miles before the same pain.

One other thing that may or may not help but when I first started I running I would wear and Ipod.  I stopped and really listened to my footfall and tried to adjust my running to the quietest fall possible and not only did my shoes start lasting longer but my running became easier.  May be worth trying if you run with music.

Depends on the shoe.  I get 300 miles on some shoes and 150-200 on others (i.e. lighter shoes).  What are you wearing?
