Subject: Swimming Woes
Hi everyone! I will be competing in my first sprint triathlon on August 30th, but I still feel like I am fighting the swim. When I first started, I couldn't even swim 25 m, but now I can swim 200 m without stopping. However, it usually ends up being mostly back stroke and side stroke, because the crawl wears me out too fast. The part I'm having the most trouble with is the breathing. I don't think I'm exhaling consistently, so I'm wearing myself out. Plus I keep getting water up my nose, which doesn't help things. I could get a nose plug, but I'd rather learn to go without one. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Others will be much more qualified to answer the specific questions about your swimming, but I think that as long as you are generally comfortable in the water, I bet you will find a way to get it done.  The adrenaline will kick in and you will be inspired by the moment.  You may not have a very fast time, but I'll bet coming out of the water after finishing the swim will be one of the more memorable and  satisfying moments of your race.

Good luck!!!

I was the same way. I found some videos that actually helped. I tried all the free info sites and finally spent a little money and found what I needed. Here is a link to Tri Swim Coach. Tri Swim Coach is a sponsor here as well. http://www.triswimcoach.com/catalog/home.php?bid=23&partner=craig0812

I found with myself when first starting out, the main problem was balance.  I think this is the case for most people.  It could be hard to breath because you are kicking just to stay horizontal and are becomming out of breath.

try some balance drills.

once you find your balance, swimming can be easy.....

good luck

Thank you, everyone, for your advice. It is greatly appreciated! It is reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who feels this way.
