OWS-Gunpowder State Park/ Hammerman Area

Baltimore Area Triathlon Club used to have fairly regular swim workouts there. I haven't kept up with that club, so I don't know for sure. Check the Mid-Maryland Triathlon Club also - they might have a group that goes there on a regular basis.

I'd be interested in heading up there sometime...

I looked on the BATC website and they organize swims there but not on a regular basis.  I was thinking more of a weekly group swim on Thursdays from 6-8 pm, similar to what CGI does in New Jersey. 

I've been to there swims and they get a great turnout every week and it's a great way to meet local triathletes.  Sometimes some people will get together for a run or ride afterwards.

If anyone is interested in starting something like this I would like to get the ball rolling.

I would like to start swimming there once a week, too.  I haven't done an open water yet and my first tri is around the corner!  More than happy to coordinate with you.  Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected].

What does everyone's schedule look like for next Thursday (08/20)?  I'll be up at Northeast from Thursday to Sunday so this week is booked up for me.  From other posts it looks like that for most of the Baltimore/Maryland BTer's also. 


Let's get a group going for next Thursday at 6pm and then we can see how it goes from there.

Bring your bikes and running shoes also just in case.  I'll try to map a "safe" ride and bring some cue sheets too.

we can always push back the time to 7pm if everyone can agree or we can do an early morning swim.  I'm going to check out the park tomorrow around 6am to see if the gates are open.  the good thing about hammerman is that it's not deep so it's safe practice for athletes new to open water swimming.

also, just in case anyone is wondering the distance is approx 270m end to end in the buoyed area (one way).

Thursday, the 20th is good for me.  I am off that day (on furlough ).  6 PM or 7 PM is good.  Keep me posted!

I just did an OWS there on Sunday and they don't open the gate until 8 am, state park rules. 

i can TRY and get off work early but its a tough day... but either way now i have a good place to try and swim....

how does wed night look for everyone?  I originally just threw out thursday but any day is fine with me. 

Wednesday the 19th looks OPEN for me

i'll be up there wed and thursday at 6 unless for something crazy comes up at work on wed.  anyone interested in coming out either of those days i'll see you there.

I plan to be there Thursday at 6:00 pm.  I am working late Wednesday.  I have never been to this site.  So, where do you meet?  Any special instructions and/or directions?

could possibly be a brick training day.  it all depends on how early i get out of work.  if i can make it home to get my bike then yes, i'll ride.  if not, i'll definitely be riding after the swim on thursday.  by all means bring your gear, i'm sure the others that are showing up might want to get out after swimming.  its a great area to run, i believe they have a running trail that's 1/2 road and 1/2 dirt. 

i STILL dont have a road bike... just a crappy mountain bike... and i wouldnt be able to keep up running but ill still try and make it

i'm probably going to be the worst runner in the group tomorrow.  i also have an extra bike if you want to get in a ride.depending on how tall you are i can bring it with me and you can use it.  its a 50 cm, fits 5'3" to 5'9".  i have regular pedals with cages also. 

oh boy. Every time I hear talk like that before a group ride it's a hammer-fest. I'm worried now.

i just realized that all of this planning and the weather hasn't mentioned or checked.  so, i checked and it looks like a possibility of rain and lightning.  if so, definitely not a good idea to swim.  if it's raining at 5:30pm i guess canceling would be safest. 

if it does rain i'll be heading out to ma and pa to run (i have to keep up with my training for Philly Marathon).  If anyone wants to join let me know.
