I am a little under 3 weeks out from my triathlon.  After coming off three great days of training, I am at a rest day.  I feel like I should still be out there training today.  My body does not feel that tired and I feel like I should get some type of exercise in.  Anyone else have problems with off days?  Especially when it is so close to the date of your tri?

Yeah I have had that feeling before, I usually take one of two routes.  First I try and jam in every other chore/errand that I have to do for the rest of the week into that day so I don't miss workouts the rest of the week and still feel good about getting stuff done.  Or two try and do something light that I don't normally do that won't negatively effect my training reg. maybe doing some core or go kayaking (lazily) or something.

I often feel like this on rest days, but you have to remember that not resting is the quickest way to injury.

If I feel restless I usually go for a long walk and then head to the gym for a long stretching session. I stretch from head to foot and then spend 10 minutes in the hot tub and then go into the steam room. Personally I like to spend around 8 mins in the steam room and then have a cold shower, then repeat. Its also a great day to have a sports massage if you have any aches or pains.

Its also a really good time to go over mental preparation for races- imagining what to do in each transition and how you will cope with any unexpected events etc

This usually makes me feel great, I get the same relaxed sensation as if I had a hard training session (alright not quite the same) and I know I have aided injury prevention by making my muscles more supple. Elongating the muscles also increases your stride and therefore speed and quickens recovery so you are ready for a good training session the next day!

Good luck!

Well, why do you take a rest day? Is it part of a plan? Do you have a coach who set's your schedule? What do you think the purpose of a rest day is?

It is part of my plan, just a day off.  I use it to rest my muscles at least once during the training week.  It is more for prevention of injuries in order that I don't go out and train and try to push through a workout in which I may tweak something.  However, I did like scotty's reply about using it as a long stretch day, mental preparation, and muscle relaxation day.  I just feel like I need to be doing something to go forward in training and not fall back.

The reason I asked those questions is that rest days, like all your training days, should have a purpose. Everyone's body is different in so much as how they absorb work, recover, and improve. I have a rest day once a week following long rides and runs over the weekend. It allows me to recover, allows my body to absorb the benefits of the previous week, and set's me up for better quality work in the week ahead. Again, it has a specific purpose. If this is something you are aiming to achieve, than taking the day off is as important as doing all your other workouts correctly.
