Just moved to Boston, been riding the trail along the Charles, but tired of the start and stop, and pedestrian dodging. Also need to get in some cheap/free swims until the gym membership starts at the end of august. Have car will travel but hoping not to have to drie too far to do it.

Advice appreciated.

Welcome.  Walden Pond is a great place to swim.  It costs $5 to park, but you can always park at the high school and ride your bike or walk to the pond.  It's a triathlete haven.  You can easily find a group doing a ride after a swim.  I think some folks are heading down there tomorrow.

Hi,
The website from Charles River Wheelman, has a lot of great rides close to Boston.  Check the links for the rides in the West,  a lot of them go right past Walden Pond so you could get a swim and a ride in  out there. The close western suburbs have lots of great biking roads.

Tuesday nights there is a group ride starting from cleveland circle - green velo and landry's lead it - but it is marked by green beer mugs too.  I do that one often on my own  it is about 28 miles, and since I start from home it ends up longer.

tomorrow a few of us are meeting at 7am at walden to swim and then do a 64 miler you are welcome to join.

Thanks all for the help, I've heard about Walden but haven't been there. I assume being that it's a pond that it's warm enough to be friendly to those of us (including the fiancee and I) that don't have wetsuits?

As for the 64 mile ride, that's about double what I've done in a day so far, so we'll have to pass but one day late this season or early next, maybe my fiancee and I could try to wheel suck our way through one of those LOL.

But I do like the idea of going out there, swimming and riding.

Walden right now is 76-78.  I have NO intention of wearing a wetsuit.

There is a way to do a shorter version of the ride we are doing tomorrow - and it is well marked so you don't need a cue sheet or map.

Come play!

We got out there about noon, and found the park on lockdown due to the number of visitors. So we got a few miles in and had lunch before we got to the pond. I have never seen water so clear in a pond. So nice. Great temperature too. We got in a decent little swim for being out of the pool for a couple weeks (500 yards, give or take). Also, because of the hills, I hit my new max speed going down one of those hills (31.8 MPH) near the entrance.

We will DEFINITELY be back there, probably next weekend, and hopefully much earlier in the day. Thanks for the great advice everyone.
