Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay so I've been swim "training" for 8 weeks, have slowly gotten better but have never been able to swim more than 200 yards with out stopping to rest. I can usually muscle out a 500 - 750 yrd session (15 - 25 minutes), with 15-30 sec. rest between 50's This past Saturday I had the opportunity to attend a clinic for first timers and actually practice the swim in the actual lake. It was huge looked very intimidating, pretty much FAILED after about 1/4 of the distance. Been freeking out all the rest of the day Saturday and all day today, since the tri is next week, had made a plan to swim from buoy to buoy from kayak to kayak. Went to the pool 3 hours ago, I have no idea what happened but I just swam 800 yards with out rest, and ONLY stopped cause my foot was cramping and my neck was sore from turning to breathe. After about 200 yards I was like "hey i'm not tired, i feel good." After 800 I was not breathing hard at all! WHAT HAPPENED? HOW DID I DO THIS? HOW CAN I DO THIS NEXT SUNDAY? Is this a fluke? I've gotten back a little bit of confidence but plan to try and swim atleast 750 no rest 2-3 more times before Sunday. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You have 2 choices, you're either going to swim the distance or you're not. Choose to do it. Doesn't matter if it's slow. Doesn't matter if you have to do some backstroke, tread water, etc. Take your time, and just have fun with it. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yea I'm being a bit sarcastic, I guess I'm just kinda excited about this break through. I almost want to try and od it right now to see if it would be possible again |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That's why its called a break through. You broke through the mental block. Once you did it once, now you can do it a thousand more times. |

X2, i believe most of it is purely mental with the addition of your pacing. If you go hard and all out you will most likely crash, based on the fact you've only been at it 8 weeks. My situation was very similar. My first race this summer, I got a quarter of the way and had to resort to breast stroking the .5 miles. Today I completed my forth tri, third @ .5 mile swim distance, and swam the entire swim course today. Overall, I've cut over ten minutes off my overall time. Drive and pacing, but overall you have to be mentally prepared for the pain, stress and doubt. You can do it! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() start at the back of your wave, relax and knock it out. You will be fine. Don't think about not being able, just think about rounding the buoy and take it from there. No worries. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad to hear it! It must be a confidence booster to have the breakthrough and know that you can go the distance! I've found that fitness gains come in spurts. For long periods of time I'll feel like I'm stagnant, and then all of a sudden my fitness gains will catch up all at once. Sounds like you had your breakthrough at a perfect time! |

Yup, that's pretty much the general reply from the ut girls when they "meet" someone from A&M. ;-) You're going to ROCK the Bridgelands Sunday! Just chill and focus on what needs to be done. You are going to do GREAT!!! If you're out here in the NW shoot me a pm and we'll hook up for a run or something. Else shoot me a pm with your bib number later this week after ppu and I'll see you in transition Sunday. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That's awesome! I have always thought the first several hundred yards of any swim to be the worst. Once my HR is up and I am in a rythem the swim gets more comfortable. I think your new found confidence will make race day a breeze! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on the break through! My sister in law and I are supposed to be competing in our first tri on August 22nd, but the first time she and I went to do OWS training, she had what I'd call a mini panic attack when she got about 20 yards offshore (Lake 288). We've been back once and se did a little better, but we haven't been back since. I really hope she's able to work through this, but with a little less than 3 weeks to prepare, I don't see her making it. If any of you guys have any advice on how to help her get past this, I'd love to try and help her. I think her biggest fear is that she can't see the bottom and has no idea what's around her. I love the OWS and feel really at home, but I'd hate to see her back out. Congrats again! tb |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() People will tell you time and time again, that OWS is very different than swimming laps in a pool. I don't know why people freak out when they can't see the bottom or there are no edges to grab on to. All you have to do is flip over on your back and float. Just relax and float. I have seen plenty of Tri people do breast stroke and even doggie paddle to get thru the swim. OWS is great, especially in the ocean. Swimming up the wave and over the top is thrilling and makes you feel like you can take on the world. If I could hoop and holler and not take in too much water I would get loud. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It sounds like you were letting the 50yd lap limit you before going out on to the lake. You were swimming 50 yards, because that's how long a lap was. Even though you bailed partway through the first lake swim, it seems like it was probably because you went 4x longer than you had in the pool, not because you couldn't handle the distance. So just remind yourself that you *can* handle the distance, just focus on the next 5 strokes (not the whole thing all at once) and have fun. |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My two pieces of advice that got me thru my first (and to-date only) OWS in a tri. First, don't focus on the entire distance. Think of it in terms of segments. It was a triangle course for me, so it was easy to just keep thinking about the buoy up-ahead and the fact that it wasn't really that far away and getting closer every time I looked up. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey! I was there too and my experience was similar. The crazy thing is I swim in a lake a few times a month and I still freaked at Bridgeland. The good news is I had a good buddy with me and he talked me through my panic attack and about 150 yards in I got my groove and it felt great! I also went to the pool today and swam my first 1250 without stopping! A great swim day for both of us ![]() Here is my plan - the lake many of us go to on Sundays I am going to try to get to this Friday and work out some of my anxiety. The other thing I would highly recommend is getting in the water on race day. Set up your transition and get your butt in that lake. When I go out to 288 I have to swim a warm up or I get geeky. I didn't get to do a warm up the day of the clinic and I think that is what had me all freaked out. The warm up is very important for me. |

You hit the break though point where your timing and breathing just seem to line up. Don't worry about speed, just swim the same, get a couple more pool sessions in and perhaps an open water if you can. If you can't do an OWS, practice lifting your head half way down the lane to sight. Have a great race and have fun! |
