Subject: Help please - cracked carbon frame

So the bike is just about 3 mos. old and the frame cracked. What happened was, the front derailleur somehow got caught in the large chain ring which caused the derailleur hangar to be pulled apart from the frame, resulting in a crack in the frame where the 2 screws attach the hangar to the frame.  Here are  my questions.

1. I found a place,  calfeedesigns that says they can fix the frame to be structurally sound. Would you trust a fixed carbon frame? (turnaround time 4-6 wks)

 2. QR is being horrible to work with and said I'll be able to get a new pink one when the '10's start rolling off the line.(3-6 mos)  New bike, not frameset. I already have all my components from this bike and don't need another bike, just a frame. Could I recoup my $$ from selling my components that are slightly used? They've got less than 400 miles on them! I'm trying to get QR to just replace the frame with a "10 but they don't sell framesets, just complete bikes.

Nevermind the fact that the bike broke at mile 17 of a HIM and I finished in the small chainring only, and IMFL is 13 weeks away....

No, cant' take a picture now, QR has my frame and I didn't take a picture before I sent it b/c it went straight to QR from the bike shop. It's a small (1/2") crack starting at the bottom screw hole and going down and towards the back of the bike.

not sure why you think QR doesnt sell framesets?

they have framesets listed at:

trisports.com
racycles.com

and i am sure there are more

(ETA they might not sell that frame, but could you stand to ride another one of theirs, assuming you need a frame now?)

Oh, ok.

Well how deep is the crack? Do you know?

Have you done your research on how that carbon bike was made? I saw a show that showed how Trek made their carbon bikes... very interesting stuff. Might help you in making your decision.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Sounds like a hard decision though. What a pretty bike too! It would be a shame if you never saw her again!

Does Qroo have any dealers with the exact same bike in stock that they could get to you in trade for Qroo shipping them a new 2010 model?

Did the shop ship just the frame back, or the whole bike?

QR has your frame but did you strip the components before you sent it or do they have the whole bike?  Is QR going to charge for the new pink 2010?  My guess is that they have offered you some sort of discount not a free replacement bike.

I cracked my QR frame this sping in a crash and had a real bad time with QR customer service.  At first they quoted me a discounted replacement price.  I turned this quote into my insurance and the insurance accepted it.  When it came time to finallize the deal with QR they told me they would not sell me the discounted frame until they inspected the crashed  frame.  I told them I would not send them the crash frame until they quarenteed that they would sell me the discounted replacement.  They said that it would depend on what they found with their inspection.  And around we went.

I finally bought a clearance frame online (backcountryoutlet.com) and swaped the components over.  In the end I walked away with a better frame (Lucero Lite vs Seduza) at a cheaper price than what QR was going to sell me a replacement frame for.  I like their bikes but their customer service was a disappointment.

Yes, they do have framesets for sale, but not the Dolce LTD. That's the bike I want. There are zero LTD's left in a size Medium. Since it was a limited edition, there were only 40 or so made (so I've heard) and they're completely sold out. I did ask just for the helluvit if QR would ship me a Dulce frame(blue and white), not the Dulce LTD, and they said it wasn't sold as a frameset, just a complete bike. It's really all about the pink camo bike though. Im being very shallow and I admit it, but really, I just love the paint job.

QR's got the frame, nothin else.  Im assuming that QR will charge me for a '10 Dolce LTD unless I can get them to send me just the frame. That's what I'd really like, just a new frame and let my LBS reassemble it w/ a new frame. QR did offer me their new tri bike for a mere $1450 if I sent the rest of my components back. If there was $1450 laying around, it might have been an option. I agree w/ you though, so far their customer service has been horrendous. Not a fan at all.

So $1450 to walk away with a bike that has an MSRP of $2699, not a bad deal if you have the $$ and can afford to wait for the new bike.

How much $ to fix the old frame?  If the damage is limited to the seat tube and not down into the bottom bracket then I would not have a problem riding a repaired frame.

Go with calfee.  I have a p2c that is cracked and will be sending them the frame at the end of the year. I talked with the Cervelo rep for a while at the philly tri and he says they refer almost all of their non-warrantied frame work to them. Just my 2 cents.

try checking out nytro.comI looked at the site and while the qr frameset you are looking for isn't listed on there, I got my lucero from them and they were great. It actually was a frameset that they built up for me even though it was listed on the site as a complete bike. They are wonderful to work with and seemed to be pretty flexible helping you find what you want/need.1.800.697.8007you never know, worth a shot. good luck. that sucks

How much is it to fix the carbon frame?

Do you have your old bike to train on in the while it is getting fixed?

I didn't realize that this happened when reading your RR....bummer.

Hope you can resolve it soon you have some serious IM training ahead of you.

Calfee is great at fixing carbon fiber. LOOK send their repairs to Calfee. But, it's got to be worth the money. Rule of thumb is that the frame has to retail for >$2500 to make the repair economical. If they do fix your frame, the cost of paint alone make it an astronomical cost.

I think you're SOL. IIWY: I'd take whatever frame they get me and save the $1450 for a new bike at a later date.

I had a carbon frame repaired by Calfee last year.  It cost me $400, plus about $50 shipping, if I remember correctly. The cost will depend on how extensive the damage and whether you need a full paint job or just a touch up.

I'm very happy with mine.

This is why I only go with Trek when it comes to bikes especially with carbon frames...my uncle's carbon frame broke on his VERY expensive road bike and they replaced it free of charge, brand new frame. You can't beat a lifetime warranty on a carbon frame. I hope everything works out and you get your bike back soon.

I work in a LBS and what you're saying sounds pretty unusual (generous).  Specialized, for instance, will replace frame-for-frame unless it is an outdated (or "one of a kind") frame-then they will replace with the closest CURRENT model.  FRAME ONLY!  Also, even though most bike frames have warranties, the small print says that the cost to swap components is NOT covered by warranty.  If QR wants to give you a brand new bike, I'd say take it.   Also-bike companies typically require they get the busted frames back.  That, or else the LBS destroys them on the spot.  (Notice most bike shops have stools made from bicycle main triangles).   Good Luck.

I think it's the opposite, it sounds like she has to pay for the replacement, and that they won't just replace the frame. Plus a long wait. It doesn't sound like a warranty so they don't need to give her anything, but when I have worked with Specialized and other companies on crash/non-warranty stuff, they usually end up giving people a good hook up even if they have to pay a small amount plus the turn around time has been very fast.

If Calfee can do it in time for your race and you have something to ride in the mean time, go that route. The location and size doesn't sound like it is a difficult place to fix or one that would be worrisome to ride after a fix. If that's what you want to do, tell QRoo now that you just want your frame back and to ship it immediately. And get on the phone to Calfee and get your bike in the line up.

My bad-didn't read enough.  Any chance your LBS that sold the bike can help out.  Did they service the bike recently?  Was the der. issue something that could've/should've been caught during the bike build?  After all, they too have a reputation to protect.  QR may be more willing to listen to a shop owner or regional sales rep.  Try to enlist their help.

Thanks for all the ideas - I really appreciate the input, especially the good stories about calfee...Looks like Im going to go that route. They said about $200 to fix w/ a 6 wk. turnaround period. The estimate is w/out repainting so IDK about a total cost yet. The crack is just limited to that one spot and not into the bottom bracket so that's good news.  Ironlib, I do love nytro and have done business w/ them in the past even tho they're in Ca.  Originally, I wanted to get the bike thru them but they couldn't get their hands on one. Great store, excellent service...the LBS that I did buy the bike from is 2.5 hrs. away from me (only store to stock it) and when I called about the frame, they said they doubted highly it was cracked b/c frames don't crack there. It was likely cosmetic and to send them a picture just to make sure. I was not happy w/ that and have since heard some not so good stuff about how they do business.  I do have another bike so that's not an issue (although QR doesn't know that).  I assumed that a replacement frame would have been offered - I certainly would have taken it but they were only giving me the opportunity to BUY an upgraded frame  or a complete bike(at a discounted rate) b/c the Dolce doesn't come as a frameset. I do not think I should have to BUY anything at this point after spending $2800 in April for a new bike! I shipped the bike back to QR from another shop (closer, QR dealer, great reputation) and before they shipped it out, I called QR to ask if one of their reps could just come out to the shop and take a look at it. They said they only have one rep and he's in California. How a company like QR has only one rep, I don't know...now I just have to call QR, tell them instead of shipping the frame back to me, ship it to Calfee and go from there. Thanks again for all your input!
