Newbie to tri (just turned 50 / overweight) and need to seriously improve my swimming. I have the T I book and am making slow progress. I read (I'm 1/2 way thru), understand (at least I think I do), but have difficulty putting it into practice. At this point, I'm guessing a few sessions with a coach would be beneficial.
I'm unsure if I'm ready for Master's group swims at the rec centers. I usualy swim 2x a week for 1000m-1500m with a 20-30 sec  break every 50m.  Generally my time for each 50m is in the neighborhood of 1:20 - 1:30.

1) Am I ready for the Master's groups? If not, suggestions to get there from here.
2) Do I need individual instruction? If so, please recommend a coach who is reasonably priced (this economy is killin' me!)
3) Any other constructive thoughts, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

SandMan is right around the corner!
(Oh yea, I'm terrible about logging my training.)
Thanks in advance

I don't think there's a local TI coach.. I think there's one in Richmond or No Va..

I would say, check out the tri clubs around the area.. Coastal Racing and Final Kick.. They should have posted group swims on website.. Group swims are very beneficial. There's a wealth of knowledge in those clubs. Im sure you could get assistance.

If your endurance is lacking, i would change workout a little bit.

ex:
1000 m
300 warm up (pulls, kicks, fs)
5 x 100m :10 - :15s rest
or
10 x 50m :10 - :15s rest

200 cool down (slow)

I would suggest the masters swim class at the VB Rec centers.  There are all ability's of swimmers there, and yes there are beginners in the class.  I started out barely making it from one end of the pool to the other, to becoming a pretty good swimmer and I really think I owe it to these classes.  They only cost 3 bucks a class and 50 bucks a year to join the Rec Center.  Betsy teaches the classes and she rocks!

I did take a total immersion clinic last year at the Great Neck Rec Center.  I do think it helped my become more comfortable in the water but not sure it was worth the hefty $500 price tag.
