Subject: Glucosamine - Does it work?
Just started seeing a well regarded Chiropracter in Bangkok (there are not many here), and he recommended that I take 1500mg of Glucosamine per day to help lubricate my joints.

I tried the stuff several years back and did not feel it made any difference. Perhaps I did not give it enought time to work (?). Would welcome any BT'ers input, thoughts or experience with the stuff.

On a related note, the cost of the Glucosamine is about $1 per dose of 1500mg. Is that cheap or expensive?

Thanks.

I find it works for me. I have a torn acl and almost no cartilage in my right knee and chips in my elbow. I take 1500 G-C a day. I find when I stop taking it, my joints hurt more. I have tried this on-off experiment many times and always get the same result..it helps me. The research has been mixed though.

Good luck!

If it is good enough for million dollar plus thoroughbreds, its good enough for me!

Put me in the "it works" camp, too.  I've been taking it for several years now.  Started taking it when my knees were bothering me (lots of creaking, crunching, general soreness).  Was told I have very little (if any) cartilage left, so I figured it certainly couldn't hurt taking it.  At that time, I could barely run 2x a week.  After it finally kicked in (a good 3-4 months, I'd say), I was able to run nearly everyday if I wanted to.  I take the Osteo-BiFlex brand, advanced triple strength with MSM...seems to work the best for me.

I take Sam's brand of Triple Strength.  It does take about a month for it to start working but I feel it has helped me a ton.  I have no cartlidge in my right knee and only 25% in my left and it helps with that but what it really does for me is help lube the hip joints.  I really develope sorness there and this stuff works wonders.

I have read that it is a hit or miss thing with most people...it either works GREAT or does nothing.

I would give it at least 90 days and see.

Good luck

Steve

I've read some reports where glucosamine can raise your cholesterol.  I took it for 4 months and stopped taking when I learned my LDL count had spiked since my last blood test earlier in the year.  After several weeks, my LDL count was back down to normal.  There's no clinical data backing this correlation, but i believe it to be a factor in raising my cholesterol.

There are tons of studies on this stuff. The problem is that there are many combinations and quality of the stuff on the market. None of the studies that I have seen have any adverse affects. Many have no effects at all. In some, however, they were shown to actually re-grow cartilage. I am not an expert on supplements, but I have been told to look for the glucosamine/chondroitin HCL combination, if possible in a liquid form. Supposedly it is supposed to work better than the others.

Yep, that's what I figure. I fed it to my former racehorse (whose granddaddy was worth many millions - Secretariat ) as he aged and it pepped him up quite nicely. Extended his jumping career at least a year or two. I'm considering it for me now that my knees are letting their displeasure at hiking descents be known, but haven't started yet.

Is there a way you can order it from the states or have friends/family ship it? $1/dose seems kinda high, but then again, with shipping and customs, getting it from here probably wouldn't be any cheaper.
