Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was just driving home from my masters swim. I was stopped at a red light on a busy road (2 lanes in either direction) On the other side of the road I see a muscle head mashing away on his mountain bike In the DARK, with black shorts, black shirt, no light on bike, no helmet, ipod attached to his arm with ear buds in ears, AND there is NO SHOULDER on this road!! Which means he is biking in the righthand lane!!! I so wanted to turn my car around and get on my soap box. |

The rest of it, though, is dumb. I think he/she meant that its pretty dumb to ride on a road with no bike lane/shoulder, on a busy street, with absolutely no way for other drivers to see you. If you are going to have no light and wear black clothes you could at least ride on the sidewalk where its a little bit safer. It's just another person not having common sense...I saw an idiot today on a bike too. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yes- I meant that he was asking for trouble by riding in the dark on a road without a shoulder with absolutely no way that someone driving 40 or 50mph can see them before they are on top of the guy. |

I almost ran over our courtesy patrol in my apartments because he was riding a bike, wearing all black, and he is African-American. At least he had a helmet on... and a light on the back of the bike... but NO LIGHT up front. I also saw a guy just like you described above... riding a down a busy road in front of my house ... a road that I'm scared to ride on. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sheesh, and I thought MY outfit was not quite bright enough! Three front lights (well, I gotta be able to see!), a reflective vest, but only one back blinkie light. My other one bit the dust and I can't find my spare. ![]() ![]() |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That's pure stupidity on a bike? I wish that was the stupidest thing I see. I've seen someone on a 5 major road (two lanes each way plus center turn) Bolt straight through a red light while the oncoming traffic was turning left. No helmet. Luckily (well maybe) the car he cut in front of stopped for him. Unfortunately he turned off on to a walking trail before I could have a little talk with him. |

The helmet wouldn't save him from the crash that would ensue in that situation. A helmet doesn't make anyone a safe rider. It can lessen the severity of the little stuff, i.e. concussions, scrapes, etc., but it's not going to save you from an oncoming car. Edited by DrPete 2009-08-12 6:25 AM |

![]() | ![]() I was stopped at a light a few weeks ago and 4 kids 15ish years old with additional kids seated on their handle bars came riding through the red light, in between the two lines of stopped traffic on a 4 lane road. The light turned green when they were still in front of me and people started going. I stayed stopped. I truly hope my kids are not that so as to (a) stupid when they are 15 as to ride bikes in traffic and (b) older so as not to endanger idiot kids by driving past them while they ride against traffic. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Passed 5 bikes tonight on my ride...coming towards me! Idiots. Two were teenagers (who should really know by now what side of the road bikes belong on) but the other three were actual, real cyclists. Or maybe they weren't. |

Where are the statistics? haha At least to me in this situation it doesn't seem safer...maybe not so safe when crossing intersections since cars might not see you when they are turning right...I figure in this situation you are target any time you are on the street (since nobody will see you until they run you over), if you are on the sidewalk you only at worry about intersections. That's my thinking. |
