Subject: Recovery Run with Heart Rate WAY too high.

Today I did what should have been a very easy 4 mile recovery run after a 7 mile tempo run yesterday.

I had no problems on my tempo run yesterday but by the time I hit the pool in the evening my legs felt like lead by the end of the workout.  When I got home, my legs felt a lot more tired than usual.

Legs still felt a little tired this morning so I decieded to take a real easy for my 4 mile recovery run today.  Backed the time down to 90 seconds/m slower than my tempo run.  Problem was, my heart rate was sky rocketing for such an easy run.  In fact, my heart rate was higher today than it was on my tempo run.  I spent the majority of the recovery run in zone 4.

WTF?  How the heck can I have an SLOOOOOW run in zone 4 (and the run was not very hilly).   Actually this is the slowest pace run I have had in a year and I still felt the sh1t.

Was I trying too hard to go slow?

sounds like you went too hard for your tempo and your body is feeling the impacts.

A walk or skipping the recovery workout all together sounds like the better option.

Other reasons could be:

Getting sick
Dehydrated
Ambient temp during the workout
HRM was giving bad info.

How was your RPE?  If you felt like the run was easy even if your HR was up, then it could have been one of the above.  If it also FELT hard with the high HR, sounds like you over did the day before.

Well now that I think about it, "hydration" and "sick" might be at issue.  On Monday night we had to put down our 10 year old English Bulldog which has been weighing heavily on me this week.  Top that with 3 nights of my wife and I having "Irish Wakes" and it looks like everything just caught up to me today after yesterdays hard run.  I have probably been running on empty and yesterday fully emptied the tank.
