Anyone else watch this?  Thoughts?

 

You get the impression that you could watch a whole season of episodes about every episdoe.  There is so much story, so little time.

 

My only nagging question is whether or not there really is Fog in London, I've always thought it was a perfect company name for raincoats and rain gear.  And perfect save with a classic one-liner, "...it will always rain"

I loved it! Although I was watching it with two newbies, and I had to keep stopping to explain a bit about back story, so they'd get the full implications of whatever was happening. I think I might go watch it again this afternoon, just to make sure I picked up all the stuff around the new Brits in the office.

I wonder what's going to happen with Sal? 

Also, on a side note, of the three things I watched last night (Mad Men, The Devil Wears Prada, and The Office Season 5), Rich Sommer was in all three!

I thought it was great. The Belvedere Hotel, where Sal and Don stayed, is right up the street from where I grew up in Baltimore, so that was funny.

I loved the way they managed to weave plot elements that are relevant today into a story that takes place in the 60’s. In particular, the tension at Sterling Cooper, now that the acquisition is happening and people are starting to lose their jobs was really interesting. Draper has a line early in the show after they fire the head of accounts, something, like, “Was he the last one? Because I’m worried about how easy this is becoming.” That’s a sentiment I’ve heard expressed a lot recently by people who’ve had to lay off large numbers of employees.

When I first started watching Mad Men, my first impression was that it was like the Sopranos, only with no blood. The same male-dominated world with lots of rules and this unspoken “code”. Lots of rivalries and jealousies, all kind of covered by this veneer of respect and professionalism. A world where women have no explicit authority and are subjugated by the culture, but manage to have a significant influence in lots of different ways, etc.

The thing with Sal reminded me of the subplot with Vito Spadafora on the Sopranos, the closeted gay character who was inadvertently outed, which started a chain of events that led to his and others deaths. It was years after we, the audience, found out about Vito before it had an impact on the plot. I wonder if the subplot with Sal will stay buried for a while. I can’t imagine it’ll stay hidden forever. He was this close to hitting on Cosgrove last season.

Loved it!  It's hard to wait another week before the next episode.

I wonder if there will be any implications later this season in the fact that Sal's encounter happened in his hometown, Baltimore.

Torn about Draper and the stewardess.  I want him to start shaping up, but I think Draper being a heel is a good portion of the engine of the show. I'm in love with Mrs. Draper also.  She is #1 on my list of celebrity pizza.

Its funny you bring up Don Draper.  I know he is the main character of this show, but I can't stand the guy.  Morally bankrupt.  Socially repugnant.

I realize it is the old David Chase writing style (remember that Matt Weiner worked under David Chase on The Sopranos) to have the stylistic challange of an endearing, but likeable, main character.  Think Tony Soprano - the guy was pond scum, but you wanted to like him.  Some thing with Don Draper, the guy is dispicable, but you want to like him. 

But nothing redeems Don Draper in my eyes.  Every chance he has to be a good person, he fails. 

That's why I guess I like Pete the best.  He's driven, motivated and frankly, makes no bones about it.  He's upfront about his ambition, lays it out on the table and works forward from that premise - whereas all other characters try to wear two faces. 

(yes, I realize that Pete / Peggy situation contradicts my viewpoint, but from what we've seen - his transgressions are minor)

Umm, Pete doesn't treat his wife very nicely. Personally I find that Peggy is the least two-faced and the most compelling character.
