From my minimal research and experience i believe i swim pretty slow. The pool at the Y is 25m. I average about 30secs to cover that. Bear in mind im doing the breast stroke. I do it in about 10-11 strokes. But, when i was doing the freestyle it was pretty much the same time so the question is still valid.

I see some people at the pool who can fly. So how long does it take you to do a lap?

I am actually blazing fast over 50yards...However I cannot got for more than 100 right now. I can seem to slow down.

In an actual race, I have swam it in under 16 seconds. I think I was 8 at the time.

I'm probably actually a little slower than that even.  I average around 2 minutes per 100yds, so that is 30 seconds per 25 yards.  I feel like I am pretty slow, but swimming fast is not a priority to me yet because I wear out way too quickly.  Thus, I prefer to swim at my current pace (16-17 strokes per length) and focus on not drowning.

Interestingly, a guy at the pool yesterday came up to me and asked my how I learned to swim so fast in the couple months since I've been there.  I almost passed out from surprise, because I know I am not fast....but it is all a matter of perspective.  He is a beginner also, and swims much slower than I do, so to him, I am fast.

I'm slow. The best I have done, 25 yards freestyle, is 28 seconds in 15 strokes. But, that was the last lap of a 1,000y swim and I just wanted to see what I could do.

I typically average 30 seconds at 17 SPL.

I am a slow swimmer, and it takes me 18 seconds.  And I am not 8 years old.

Oh yes, and I forgot to mention - that is when I am swimming as fast as I possibly can, and after that I am completely exhausted, so the trip back to the other side takes me like....half an hour.

OK, Tania....so you do it in 18 seconds and you are "slow" you say?  I do it in 30 seconds on a good day....hmmmm, think I might need some flippers and a jet pack

I'm fast- I can cover 25 M in less than 15 seconds, based on my 50 pace. Not bad for a girl. That being said, no one ever won a triathlon on the swim.

Yes, well as my disclaimer states, that is when I am doing 25m speed drills, with lots of rest between them!  When I am just "swimming", it gets exponentially slower the farther I am planning to swim. If I'm being serious, then it would be closer to 30 seconds per 25m, and after 1000m I have to stop or they'll find me at the bottom of the pool. I swam 2000m once, and it took me over 30 minutes. So I am slow in real swimming, but hey, if we're only talking about 25m, then watch out!

Tania, you're hurting me.  It takes me about 40 minutes to swim a mile and that's on a good day!  I suppose you are also one of those "slow" runners who run 9 minute miles (as opposed to my new super-fast pace of about 10.5)

My best 50 yd time is 46 sec, so half that would be 23 sec, and I avg 16-18 spl., but I'm a 2:11/100 yd swimmer over distance.

That probably is slow for a killer whale, it's just fast for Aggies and crabs.

Uh oh.  Yes I am a slow runner. My 5k "race pace" is somewhere around 8:30 (PR was 24:57) and my "training pace" is 10 minutes. And I never place in my age group (except once, that PR got me third), so I consider myself slow. But only in comparison to others, I've greatly improved my times over the years. So really, fast and slow are subjective until you put others into the mix. I'm sure I will always consider myself slow because of the people I train and race with.  But that's OK with me.

I REALLY want to be slow like you!!   In all seriousness, you're doing pretty darn good Tania.  But like you said, it is all a matter of perspective based on who you are training with/racing against.

My 5k pace is still around 12:00/mile.  But I am much faster than everyone who is sitting on the couch eating pizza while I'm out running!!

As long as I'm the fastest I can be by putting forth a good solid effort, I'm happy.  Now, if I slack off and am slow as a result, shame on me!

Sounds like we're all in the average. Not slow, not fast, just half fast.
