Any Divas out there for September 12 at White Lake?

I'm excited since it will be my first open water Tri and there won't be any big burly men to swim over me!!!

Nice to meet you too!  How long have your been running/Tri-ing?

I just started running in January.  First Tri was August 9 in a pool.  The Dash for Divas will be my first open water.

I've been a runner all my life -- I used to run track & field growing up. Got into middle-distance running after marrying my hubby/running with him. I just started triathlons last year & became hooked. Smile I actually enjoy cycling the most now.

OWS can be interesting. Wink It would be great if you could get in an OWS practice before the race. It's a totally different feel, one that I'm still getting used to (or at least trying to!). LOL  But if you don't squeeze one in, you'll be fine. It should be a super fun race!!!

I will be there too!  My first tri.  I have done runs and and a couple of Splash and Dashes, but never any biking or an OWS!  Excited and spooked at the same time.

15finds, you will do great! ...especially being a women's-only tri. White Lake is a great course.

3 more weeks! Looking forward to seeing everyone. We should have a quick BT huddle-hello! I'll post what I'm wearing the week of the race (for easy ID).

Thanks Trielle!  I need all the props I can get : )  AND I'll take any advice you have on what to wear!  Too warm for a wetsuit, right?

Yes... would be fun to meet up!

I met a BTer at my last race and ironically one of the photos that was taken has us running together!  It was right at the point that she caught up with me and passed me.. lol (I had a 5 min. head start).

Trielle - I'd love to get some open water practice.  Can you recommend a place that has public access?

15finds - I wore compression shorts and a sports bra top at my first Tri.  Worked fine.  But since then I've purchased Tri shorts and I also have a Tri top on the way via mail order.  Hope it fits.  If not, I'll just do the sports bra top again.  I'm not expert, but I think the swim will be short enough and warm enough not to need a wetsuit.

Are ya'll spending the night there or driving in the morning?

Thanks Maria40NC, I think I might go your route also!
I looked into lodging - looks like most near the lake are already full.  I guess the other options are in Lumberton or Clinton, both about 30 min away.

Grrrr.... the Tri bra and Tri shirt came in the mail.  Both size medium.  The bra is to tight and the shirt to loose!  I really like the shirt.  It actually fits really well all over except not enough support for the run.

One of these days I'm going to find something I can both swim AND run in... <sigh>

Until then, I guess I'll keep wearing my Walmart special sports bra...

As for gear -- it will most likely be too warm for a wetsuit. I've alway worn 2-piece tri suits. I have a 1-piece as well. Sorry maria40nc that your stuff didn't fit. I've had great fitting success with Sugoi & SheBeest products -- they are very comfy. I have a couple of TYR & Zoot items. I've found that Zoot is cut very small. I usually buy prior season's items (for the price). For me, it's easier to have something I can keep on for all three events. But whatever floats your boat is the best thing to do.

As for open water practice -- I've checked into various options here in Fayetteville. You don't want to go with those options -- between insects and mud....fahgheddaboudit! If you have any friends with property at Carolina Lakes, that's an option. My girlfriends and I simply drive down to White Lake for OW practice if we want to squeeze in a session. White Lake is really nice -- very clear (you can see the bottom). I feel very comfy in the water there (and I'm not typically very comfy in OW). I will probably try to ride down to White Lake on Friday to get in an OWS. I won't swim the course but I'll probably find a spot, hop in, and swim from pier-to-pier. They appear to be approx. 75M apart.

I'm not lodging there. I plan to simply get up early and drive down race morning.

So White Lake has public swimming access?  Where do you park?  I'd like to get down there at least once before the race myself.  I'd hope to do more open water swims and eventually do one in the ocean.

Yes! It has public swimming access. It's a family hot-spot. We simply follow the signs in & park wherever it looks okay to park. We had to pay a small entrance fee. I don't have their number handy but you can call down there & they will give you all the info. I'll see what else I can find out.

Hi everyone,
My little sister has talked me into my first tri. She said that the "Dash For Divas" would be a good first.
She lives in Fayetteville and I live near Winston-Salem. We are pretty excited.
I am feeling much more at ease now that Maria informed me there will kayaks posted in the water.
Just in case.
I have been running off and on for about 15 years. My husband and I enter local races around the area.
We are trying to plan a trip to Pittsburgh to run in the Caliguiri 10k, if scheduling permits that is.
Thanks again for the advice on the tires Maria.
Good luck to everyone!
Susan.

How did the open water swim at White Lake go?  My husband is going to take me to Kerr Scott Lake in Wilkes this week, weather permitting. I feel like I should be more nervous than I am. Oh well, I'll chalk it up to being blissfully ignorant.

LOL - The open swim was enlightening.  Now I understand what everyone is talking about when they say how different it is.

I kept veering off to the left or right, the boats were making wake that was hitting me in the face or throwing me off balance, and the sun was in my eyes.  I practiced bilatral breathing and sighting a bit.  All and all a good session.  I can definitely see how incorporating more open swims in practice will be beneficial.  But now we're heading into fall weather!

White Lake is lovely.  Water is clear and it's not very deep <at least not where we were>.  It should be a good experience.

Glad your swim went well. I'll let you know how mine goes. Incidentally, I went out with some friends the other night and one girl had just done a tri in our area called the Ramblin' Rose. She gave me some seemingly good advice on the transition. She said if I stand up for the last mile to half mile it will be easier on my legs. What do ya think?

I just found out there is an International length Tri at White Lake the day after ours (September 13).  My chiroptactor is doing this one.  He's the one who got me started!

http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventID=1089

The race cap is 150 and there are still 53 slots left.  Seems it wasn't advertised very well because it doesn't come up in regular searches.  Says the cap will be 550 next year.

Maybe next year?

I might plan to stay an extra night and watch this race or even be a volunteer.

The thing that's really helped me is to simply get those brick workouts in -- getting my leg muscles acclimated to bike-run. You can also spin in a low gear/higher cadence the last mile to half-mile to flush out the lactic acid -- this definitely helps on the run.

Most importantly, have fun!
