Subject: Bananas and logging
So I tried to log a banana today and what popped up when I searched them was completely inaccurate nutritional facts - either nothing, or just calories, no other facts, no potassium no nothing.

How do I fix this?

And for instance, how would I accurately log a turkey sandwich on weat bread with cheese, spinach, tomatoes, and mustard, and the 2 tbsp of peanut butter I had with the banana? (Also had a tall glass skim milk probably 2 svings) I know I'm a n00b but I'm trying to get an accurate idea of the nutritional content of what I'm eating and it was odd. (Don't get me wrong, I wish a banana had no calories.)

Sorry if this was a stupid question.

I've found that it's really difficult to log nutritional information here on BT - especially when making your own foods at home like you're talking about.

I know there are LOTs of other sites out there dedicated to logging this type of stuff and I imagine their databases are fairly accurate, all though I've never investigated them. Fitday.com comes to mind as one that a lot of people have mentioned in the past.

I have to disagree with Lisa..I have found the logging to be very easy..at times it can be time consuming, but once you get your usual items in, it takes only a few minutes to log a meal

For teh banana, you can do a search item: then it will lsit banana, raw fom teh USDA..choose that..once it is in your log, then you might ahve ot choose the measurement.,..there is a drop box that has a list (1 cup, i snall, 1 medium etc..) you chooese your portion then hit update...voila...

For the turkey sandwich..
Search for your bread (by brand if you can) then lettuce, etc..it takes practicing, but as I said once you ahve your usual items in, it becomes a ton easier.

Also, once you start logginig, it keeps tabs on your fequent list for you so you don't ahve to searh a lot.
There is a simple way to also do homecooked meals/recipes...but too long to write out

Even reading that took more time than I am willing to invest in logging my nutrition

Some people have the patience and time to do it... personally I don't. Partly because I make lots of my own foods and don't measure out exact portions when I eat. I log here under nutrition the general foods I eat, but not anything else because it's just too time consuming.

Yes, it can be more work than people are willing to spend, but i guess it depends on what your goals are..for me it is important to log every bite I take (and I am a chef/restaurant owner, so I make all my meals myself)
If you just use it to get an idea of what you are eating, then being accurate isn't a big deal..

I have to agree that logging here is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.  I have used many a site/app and this is as easy/hard as any other.  They all tend to have their pro's and cons.  But there are a ton of public foods available to search on (which of course you should verify), plus the USDA food database.  Then you can create meals of thinks you commonly eat together.  If you want to log your food just stick with it.  And it is fairly easy to add a new food (and make it public so others can benefit) so that they are always available. 

Course, this only applies for those who want to log food.  Otherwise no matter what it will be too much work no matter how simple it is.   Tongue out  Personally I have to log to hold myself responsible.

I use MyFoodDiary.com and it is super simple to put together a sandwich like that, find the right size banana, etc.

I have a mac and use Calorie King.  On a PC, Nutribase is a good one.  Both cost less than $50 and you can create your own meals, recipes, and save your favorite foods.  Maybe I'm a little anal, but when I first started logging everything I used a food scale.  After a few months I could eyeball everything down to the nearest 5 grams or 1/8 ounce.  Really helped me keep things under control.  I had the time to do it, but the last few people were right.  At first it takes time to get your usual items in there but after while, you would probably spend only a few minutes a day logging things.  Also, there's an iphone app called Lose It that's not bad for travelling or if you don't want to be tied to your computer.
