Hello everyone.

I'm having a hard time keeping my miles up for my run.  I like to average over 20 miles a week, as anything less I seem to just get slower.  My grand solution to this problem is commuting to work with my running shoes.  Its 5.02 miles one way, which I can do between 45m-1hr.

Twice would be 10 miles a day, which seems to be alot of volume, but I'll do this 3-4 days at the most.   Right now I do between 10-20 mpw done up to 40.  I'm just wondering if this is too much as I've never ever done 2 a days.

It's not too much as long as you ramp up slowly. Run to work, but have a friend/wife/coworker/bus take you home. One day during the week add that second run. Make sure you rest enough and recover, and you will get to the point where you can do 2-4 2 a days with no problem.

I think 2 a days are a great idea. As long as the early session isn't too taxing, (imo) the legs are loose and feel great for running a session later in the day. It's awesome your running to work, I highly respect that.  Do you plan to mix up your tempo and exertion per session?

I find a slower paced run early, followed by harder intervals or some fartlek later to be a good for my routine (or vise versa).

The difficult part is I'm in the desert, so in the morning its 75, and when I run home it could be over 100, but since I do consider it part of my training I will add in some tempo run and spped intervals.

I feel your pain on that one. I'm getting tired of the treadmill...

Its not fun, the worst thing about running in the heat is the performance drop; I can run an 8/min mile avg in 65 degree weather, put that same effort in 100+ and its 11/min.

I'm sure being in AZ you know exactly what I mean.

Here's a bit of inspiration for you.

Haile Gebrselassie's commute used to be just a bit longer than yours.

"Gebrselassie was born as one of ten children in Asella, Arsi Province, Ethiopia. As a child growing up on a farm he used to run ten kilometres to school every morning, and the same back every evening."

I think other people had the right idea.  Start with 2 days/week and then work your way up.

As for the heat, running in 100 degree heat seems like a bit of a disaster to me.  Could you moderate your mileage by running to work, and then walking home?
