Subject: Calf cramped during kick drills
So today when I was done with my intervals, I started kick drills.  First I did 100 meters shark fin.  Then I flipped over and started 100 meters back kicks.  I had my zoomers on and was taking good long kicks.  About 10 meters from the end my left calf cramped so bad and so fast I tried to stand up in the water.  I had to grab the musle and try to push it back down.

I then side stroked to the end and floated for a few minutes.  It was tight walking out to the truck.  I stopped and had some breakfast ( a nice feta cheese omlette & C-Milk yum) with my brother went home and went to bed.  I got up about 3:00 and as sonn as I steped on the floor I could feel that calf.

So thoughts?  Doing something wrong and just using a muscle in a way I should have been using it all along?

It seems to be a quite common thing.

My theory is becuase you are keeping the calf in a semi-relaxed state while still calling upon it to do work that the mechanism gets all F'ed up and confused and locks up.

One of the theories on muscle cramps during exercise is that the calcium molecule that "fires" to make the muscle do the work gets stuck in the "open" position and continuously flows calcium ions making the muscle stay fired.  Other than training your body more, there is not much you can do to avoid that.

Great explanation already. I also am a firm believer in a good stretching routine at least 2x a day. I believe long and elastic muscles work best and prevent some cramps.
