Subject: Sprint Tri - What to wear? (I'm new)
So I've got my first tri coming up Oct 17th.  Its a sprint and the water is going to be on the cold side (68-70).  My question is what should I wear and assuming you say its a wet suit can I wear this for the whole race?  Or plan on changing??

Any links to specific styles would be apprecatied.

Come race day my plan is to still be 6' but down to 195# (currently 211)

I would try and rent a wetsuit from somewhere around you.  It helps both keeping you warm and floating so you are moving forward.  I would not wear it for the whole race.  Try it on and take it off a couple of times you will quickly get the hang of how to peel it off.  A pair of tri shorts or Under Armor style briefs help for drying purposes.  I prefer to have a quick dry style shirt on under my wetsuit, but you can also put this on in transition if you do not want it under the wetsuit.

Especially for your first race, I would say keep things minimal and the less you have to worry about in transition the better as there is a lot going through your head at that time.

Definitely wetsuit, but not the whole race.  You can just wear a dry fit shirt and bike shorts for the whole race.  Unless you buy a whole tri-top and tri-shorts.

If you don't have a wetsuit, 70 is fine for swimming without it, if you don't want to bother with renting one.

Either way, I usually go with a tri top and tri shorts.

I'm going to get up to the closet tri shop I know of (Greenville, SC gotrisports) in the next few weeks to look at some wetsuits.  So from I gather you can wear your tri shorts and shirt UNDER the swimsuit then just peel it off in T1?

For your first race just wear whatever shorts and shirt you have that you feel comfortable in.  At this point I wouldn't worry about tri-specific wear.

If you can wear your clothes with your number under your wetsuit.

Try your running and biking shoes beforehand to see if you can go without socks

Yes. You don't want to be wrestling with putting on a dry top on your wet body in T1. Wear what you're going to wear the entire race.

Someone above mentioned wearing a number under your wetsuit? I would not advise doing this. I suppose it would work, but it would be soaking wet after your swim as you DO get wet under your wetsuit. A great investment is a $7 race belt that you can throw on in T2. Check your specific race, but most races do not require the paper number to be worn except for on the run portion.

+1 for the comments above or just go nekkid.  Guaranteed you will throw your competitors off their game.
