I have noticed that between my cassette and wheel, there is a plastic protector like disk. I have also noticed that some bikes have this and some dont. Mine wobbles a bit surely causing my bike to be a bit less aero,a lthough since I suck at biking it probably dont matter. That said, is this disc thingy necessary? Can I remove it?

That plastic disk is there to keep the wheel from getting damaged should the chain ride above the biggest ring on the cassette.  I know my bike's stock wheels came with one.  When I swapped out my wheels, I did not put one on the new wheels.  It looks way better and I have never had a single issue.  You might need a cassette tool to get it off however.

I ask, cause I just ordered a new cassette and when I am in the process of replacing, I thought I could remove this thingy if not necessary.

we lovingly call it the "dork disc"

I think it's real purpose is to make it easier to see the "green" guys at a triathlon, because their bike has this and the reflectors still in the wheels.

It's unnecessary. Realistically it won't "hurt" for it to be on, but as long as you don't set your rd limiter screw crazily, it isn't going to do anything.

Yes, you can take it off. (And, unless you want the Scarlet N on your forehead, you probably should ;-)).

whatever, I left one on for a couple years, just to mess with people; I figure if there was just one person who noticed it, judged me for it, and felt demoralized when I passed them it was worth it.
