Subject: San Antonio Question—not tri related

Next year, we’re planning to meet my parents in San Antonio and spend about a week there and in the vicinity.

Our choices are to go either in mid February or in late March. To go in February would be more convenient, but I’m wondering what the weather is like in San Antonio in Mid February.  Is it too cold to be outside walking around sightseeing?  My son loves riding horses, so we were also going to go on a trail ride or two, but I was concerned that being out riding a horse in 40-degree weather might not be much fun for a kid.

Not that cold in Feb......well......it might be. There are two seasons in Texas, Summer and Not Summer. My daughter was born in February and when we went into the hospital it was in the upper 50's. While we were still there (for the next 3 days) a cold front came in and dropped freezing rain and iced over all the bridges.....the next day it was back up into the 50's and when we left the last day it was in the low 60's. It's Texas.....you NEVER know. If you come in March, you're looking at more rain than cold......since you're from NY.....it probably won't even be cold to you no matter what temp it is.

Plus, there are usually some good runs in Feburary to early March (if you want to keep your training while being here).

Feb avg high: 67
Feb avg low:  43

March avg high: 74
March avg low:  50

It usually doesn't rain much either month.  For a Northerner I suspect that either options is pretty good.

I'd vote for March.  The chances for rain are slightly higher than for Feb, but still pretty low.

Feb. is the coldest month in Texas-wouldn't call it 'winter' but if you are used to REAL winters...you may not find it too bad. My kids have never had a 'heavy jacket' in Texas. It just does not get that cold.  San Antonio has lots to do outdoors...warmer the better IMO.  I like to do carriage rides at night, walk the Riverwalk...we usually go at the end of summer.

There really is no way to predict which would be colder or hotter even. I've used the A/C and  the heater on the same day in both months. That is how unpredicatable the weather is here. The Livestock Show and Rodeo is in town in Feb. and might be fun for your son if he's into horses and the cowboy thing. You guys going out to Bandera to ride? Lots of places out there by the Hill Country SNA that rent horses and do trail rides. Let me know if I can help you with anything or if you have any questions.
