Subject: Swimming hyper ventilation
I just started Tri's this year (2009).  I have completed 2 sprints, 2 olympics and am doing my first 1/2 IM on 09/27/2009 at Deer Creek.  In each of my events I "freak" out within the first 100 yds of the swim.  It is horrible, I always ask myself why I do this and do I want to do this.  This feeling lasts fr about 500-600 yds at which time I will breaststroke so that I can breath!  During the last part of the swim I actually start enjoying myself, by the end of the tri I really love the entire event.

My question:  How the heck do I slow my mind and head down to begin swimming freestyle while breathing?  I am already worried about the start of my 1/2 next week, any advice is greately appreciated.

Can you get in the water a bit before you start?

I had that early on.  would start to hyperventilate a bit, but I found if I got in the water and just sat there for a few minutes, I would end up gradually calming down.  This seems to have gone awasy after doing more OWS.

More time in the water. Get as much OWS experience as you can. Then, and this is important for me, make sure to get in a good warm up swim prior to the start of the race. I have gone 3-400 yards as a warm up, light at first and by the end pushing it just enough to get my heart rate up. That way you are used to the water/conditions and have gotten a little cardio warmup too. Always helps me so that, by my wave start, I am good to go and swim my own stroke they way I know I can.

Good Luck!

Warm up well.  Start the race swimming deliberately slow.  Too many people start way too fast and end up getting out of breath, contributing to the panic feeling.  Speed up when you're feeling comfortable and breathing is under control.  Good luck!
