would it be bad if i just jumped into a half ironman after a good 5month to a year of training or should i do a few sprint triathlons first?

So the run is NP. How about swim and bike?  For most 1 year is a decent build for a HIM given your background in run that could be shorter if you have any swim and bike background.  If you have no swim or bike background then it kind of depends on how quickly you build those.  I would say 8 months to 1 year would be a decent time to build for a HIM, but you really only learn transition in transition during a tri.  For a HIM you also need to have nutrition nailed down.  So, train for an end of the season Sprint, half mary late fall, early spring Oly, late season HIM and you should be good.

That's great, those are good times! You should be able to score a scholarship somewhere with those kinds of times. Probably won't be competitive DI, but you still have prospects.

Now, lets see you swim 1.2 miles and bike 56, and then pull off a 7:30 pace. I'm betting not. :D

If you give it 6 months of good effort, you can probably complete, possibly approach being competitive. If you give it a year of serious training, then yes, you could probably even be competitive. It all depends on how you approach it, and if you can swim.

I agree with the above posts.
Have you watched/volunteered at a Tri you learn a lot that way.
If you have a swimming and biking base you could be able to do a HIM, but what is the rush.
Tri's will Always be around why not be less aggressive at first and then see how things work out for you with a shorter distance ?  Look for a Tri group to join you will learn Lots!
good luck and have fun
