Does anyone know of a good triathlon to do on the east coast (NE)? Maine, Rhode Island, New Hamp, Conneticut, etc... We want to do a fun triathlon and visit the east coast at the same time. We would probably want a half iron distance... but any cool triathlon would be fun! Any ideas/suggestions??

Thanks,
kjbyom1's fiance

EDIT: I assume you mean for next year?

hmm, lots to choose from.

Keith Jordan runs Timberman Half, Mooseman Half/Oly, Black Fly TT, Sprint, Oly (can do all 3 in the weekend).  All are in NH

I have personally done Mooseman and can't say enough good things about the race, great setup, great schwag, etc.

There is also Rev 3 HIM  in Connecticut that is supposed to be good, gets quite  a few pros due to the prize money, I believe it is also in an amusement park for part of the race.  Last year it was same weekend as Mooseman.

I am sure there are a ton more but those are some off the top of my head.

When? We have HIMs from early June through September.

Preferable area?

Mooseman HIM, early June, NH
Patriot HIM late June, MA
Rhode Island 70.3, early July, RI
Timberman HIM late August, NH

I'd recommend Mooseman or Timberman as big well run HIMs. Depending where you live, Mooseman the water can be in the upper 50s so can be chilly. Keith Jordan puts on both races and he puts on top quality races.

There are some races in ME and VT but I'm not familar with them.

Echoing KathyG's rec's for Mooseman and Timberman -- both are top-notch races in lovely "lakes region" of NH.  If you're outdoorsy people and seeking a tri-centered vacation, you've got either Moose in June or Timber in August.

However, if you're more "city folk" than nature junkies, I'd recommend the Providence 70.3  Although I haven't raced it, my teammates have and they love it for the scenic point-to-point layout and capital city finish.  Plus, there's a lot of fun stuff in Providence:  great art galleries and Brown and RISD schools right there, lively dining and music scene at night, massive shopping mecca at the Providence Place Mall, and really great pizza in the Italian area up on the Hill.  NH and the lakes have nothing on Providence in those categories.

Either NH or RI, you'll have a great vacation and a great race experience...wacky weather permitting of course.  It can be iffy and rainy at times, but usually is great weather.

Cheers, -Sunny

Agreed- wear your booties for Mooseman- thats spring runoff from the snow capped peaks your swimming in.

For a slightly smaller event but one very well run as well I suggest the Firemans tri on the coast of Maine in Kennebunkport. Its a nice course, reasonably flat with an ocean swim. And a fabulous place to vacation in my estimation.

Wow, you guys were fast! I guess I should have included that we want to do it NEXT YEAR (2010) and probably later in the summer or early fall.... All of you had such great advice, it's appreciated. Look forward to looking up those races and checking back for more responses!

Then also look at the Pumpkinman Half in Maine and the Lobsterman in Freeport. Camden, Maine  also had an Oly this year with a lake swim, so its in a beautiful place but I can't vouch for its organization.

Just got done with the Lobsterman Oly in Freeport Maine. It's been named one of the best scenic tris in the country and today did not disappoint. Of course scenic is code word for hilly. I think there was a grand total of 1 mile of flat on the entire bike course but it was gorgeous fall Maine scenery with a very pretty swim in the bay. Very good course support crew and they have decent activities for spectators and kids. It's also the weekend after Pumpkinman (sprint or HIM) which I've heard only good things about.
