Subject: Masters Swimming
I finished my first race this past weekend and I am now officially addicted. Seriously, the most fun I have had in a while. Looking at my times, I already see that I need to get better at the swim. On my own I went from barely being able to swim 25 yards to finishing 400m. That 400m was ugly though. I never really learned as a kid the proper stroke. I live in Atlanta. Does anyone have any experience with a masters swim program? I am looking at Dynamo since they are close to my work. Are they worth it? What about private coaching? Any other ideas that I am not thinking of?

I had a good experience with Carol and Coach Tim at www.swimfastnow.com. They have a session coming up at the beginning of October. Tim also has a Masters class at Marist, although I have never been.

Wes - no offense - but I went to one of the swimfastnow clinics and found it to be a waste of time (and money).  Yeah, they film you underwater and spend an hour looking at everyone's video - yours maybe lasts 2-3 mins.  Then they tell you what you can improve and you do a few drills.  Leave there and by Monday you've forgotten everything and have no one to remind or help you.  Much better in my opinion to go to a masters program.  Find one where the coach actually gives tips and help.  For Atlanta there is Marist/Westminster as well as Dynamo.

PS - I don't think Tim coaches the masters at Marist anymore.

Tim used to be the sole coach of the Killer Whales (Westminster) and still coaches them at Marist on Saturday morning.  I have never been to one of his clinics but he was a great Masters coach and really helped me with my swimming.

I recently switched to Dynamo masters and highly recommend it.  I'm sure it depends on which location and coach you go to, but I've been very happy.

Not offended :-) Having someone look at you ALL THE TIME is much better than a one off, IMHO. However, I learned alot at my clinic, applied it, and shaved five minutes from my HIM swim time last year. Your mileage will certainly vary...

The nice thing about being part of a team is that there is a coach and people there to support you.   You will get a lot of stroke training.   That is what most people that do now swim well are missing.   You need someone looking at your stroke lap after lap and making adjustments.   Most swimmers have mutiple thing wrong with their strokes.   These need to be adjusted one at at time.   I have coached swimming for years and years.   Occasionally I have parents bring me their kids to work with them.   They often expect me to make changes overnight and it just does not work that way.

My advice, join a team.   You will get your money worth.

Where are you thinking about going at Dynamo?  I am on their Multi-sport team.  I would highly recommend the Shallowford Rd. location.  Great coaches and if you do the workouts, you will get better.

I as looking into the Shallowford Rd location. It work at the PDK airport so it is very convenient for me.  I wasn't aware they had a multi-sport team. What all is involved with that?
