Name: Jen (Artemis)

Story:  I did my first triathlon in 2005. I came from a competitive swimming background, but that was in high school 6 years before! I’d also biked a lot as a child.  Never ran.  I hated running with a passion!  I found BT because of the amazing Couch-to-5k running plan.  I followed it and was able to finish my first tri 3 months later.  I was hooked!  After that, I kept running.  I knew I was going to have to tackle that demon.  So, I signed up for a half-marathon.  Then I did a few more.  Last year, I ran my first marathon.  And, wouldn’t you know it, I actually enjoy running now!!

I've hit some road bumps through the process (torn meniscus, tibial stress fracture), but I've learned how to persevere through them and help avoid them in the future.  I'm not the fastest person out there, but I can always finish and have fun in the process.  And that's what keeps me coming back for more.

Family Status: married, two cats

Current Training: Currently training for a half marathon in March and a duathlon in April.  After that, I’ll start tri training for the summer and training for two fall marathons.  I’m combining a duathlon training plan with a half-marathon training plan.

2010 Races: ING Half Marathon, Monument Ave 10k, National Duathlon Festival, Rockett’s Landing Tri, Cul de Sac 5k Series, Pink Power Tri, Patrick Henry Half Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, Richmond Marathon

2009 Races: Monument Ave 10k, National Duathlon Festival Sport Race, Rockett’s Landing Tri, Run Like a Girl 8k, Cul de Sac 5k, Pink Power Tri, Patrick Henry Half Marathon, Ragnar Relay

Weightloss: I try, but am not always that successful.  I gained about 40 pounds before my hypothyroidism dose. I am down about 15 since that time.  I’m hoping to lose at least 20 more pounds, but it is always a struggle.

What will make me a good mentor: When I started this journey, I never thought I would be able to accomplish any of the things that I have.  I know that if I can do it, you can do it too.  It’s tough, but I’ll be there with you. I would love to share my knowledge with you and help you achieve your goals.  Whether you're totally new to BT and tri training or you've been here awhile and need someone to check up on you, I can be there for you.  I love being a part of the BT community and I'd like others to feel the same way.  I've done small monthly challenges with my mentor groups and answered any and all questions people might have.  I spend a lot of time on the computer and BT, so I can respond pretty quickly.

My name is Erin and I recently joined BT because completing a triathlon is on my "bucket list". I have recently started the Couch to 5k (agressive) program, mixed with the 22-wk beginner triathlete program and hope to complete the Pineapple Man Sprint Tri in June. I'm starting really early because of a previous injury (stress fracture in lower right calf) from 2005 and want to make sure I don't break it again. My ultimate goal is to complete a marathon and possibly a HIM. I'm just looking forward to completing the Sprint Tri first.

Always looking for advice & coaching.  Will try and upload my planned training at some point.

Hi Erin!!  Welcome to the group.

What part of the country do you live in?

Starting off slowly after a stress fracture is definitely a good plan.  My sports medicine doc gave me a plan pretty similar to the first few weeks of the Couch to 5k program after I came back, so that is a great place to start.   If you need any advice on putting the two plans together, please let me know.  I do that a lot for my training.

Hi!  My name is Kelly and I competed in my first sprint triathlon this past August.  I loved it but want to train better/smarter now.  I am joining this group to get information, workouts, and encouragement.  I live in MA and need a kick in the butt now that winter is upon us.  I also want to get back into my "playing shape" as I have been an athlete my whole life but am not always inspired by the same old gym workouts.  I'm hoping that by joining this group I will love to be part of a team again.  Laughing

Hi Kelly!  Welcome to the group!

Congratulations on finishing your first tri!  Do you have a race picked out for next year?  There are a lot of great (free!) training plans that you can use here to help meet your goals.  I'd be happy to help find one that will work for you.

It's hard to be motivated in the winter.  I'm currently in Virginia, so it doesn't get as cold as MA, but I'll be in Wisconsin for two weeks at the end of the month.  It's tough to keep running outside then!

Hi Jen!  My name is Kim and I'd like to join this mentoring group.

I decided last year that I wanted to run a marathon before hitting 30, so I completed a 1/2 marathon in September and during the training I've developed an interest in triathlons as well.  I still want to complete a marathon (or two) in 2010, but my main goal is to complete a sprint tri or even olympic distance in the fall if able.

The big problem is that I am just learning to swim (I signed up for lessons at the local YMCA), and I was a smoker for lots of years...but!  I'm working on the swimming and have been smoke free for two years now!

I know my biggest obstacle will be the swim training and motivation, but am hoping that if I've got a great group around me, it'll be easier!

Hi Jen, I would love to join your group. I have made a few stabs at triathlons only to get injured and sidelined and discouraged. This has to be my year. I had two torn meniscus repaired last winter. I am excited to get started but have really become a couch potato and gained alot of weight. I was a competitive swimmer as a kid (many decades ago). I just bought a new road bike....so now I have to learn how to rid it. My running (if you can call it that) is a struggle.

Hi Kim!  Welcome to the group!!

First of all, congratulations on being smoke free for two years!  That is a great accomplishment right there!!  If you can do that, you can definitely train for tris and marathons.

If you've run a half-marathon, I think you'll be in great shape for doing a fall tri.  Signing up for swim lessons is a great idea!  That will really help.  One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you for swimming is to try to be comfortable in the water.  It can be hard, but it will help.  I'll be here for motivation.

Hi Linda!  I'd love to have you as part of the group!!

Try not to be too discouraged about injuries. I know it's hard, but you can definitely overcome them and get into training.  I've been through a stress fracture and torn meniscus, so I understand.  The real key is to start slowly so that your body can get used to the new stress.  The Couch to 5k training plans here on BT are great for starting your running slowly and building gradually.  Have you taken a look at them?

A new road bike is very exciting!  Are you going to try to ride over the winter or wait until spring?

I understand the humidity!  Richmond is much more humid in the summer than what I was used to.

I'd like to join the group!  My name is Geoff and just started doing Triathlons this past summer.  I did two sprint events and am completely hooked.  I'm 32 and an educator in Yorktown VA.  I would love to get my body fat down from its current 16%.  I'm planning on doing a number of sprint events this coming "season" and am looking to be a bit more competitive (it's in my blood!)  I was a runner and swimmer when I was younger but still need help in those areas and biking!  I've taken about 2 months off and am starting back at the gym now that the semester is over.  I look forward all the help this group will provide!!

Hi Geoff!  Welcome to the group!

You're just down the road from me!  Do you have any tris in mind for 2010?  I've done a lot of the tris and races in the area, so if you have any questions about any of them, please let me know.

Coming back from 2 months off can be a little hard, but I'm always so excited to be back that it's helpful.

The bike on the trainer will help you get used to the shifting and being on the bike.  I always stock up on movies and tv shows on DVD to get me through the trainer sessions.

Hi Jen,

I'd like to join your group.  I tried the mentor group thing last year but got caught up in injuries and life.

Name: Melody

Story:  I completed one sprint triathlon in September.  I did fine in the swimming, was just about dead last in the bike (on my heavy touring bike) and didn't do must better on the run, but I was glad to finish in the pouring rain.

Family status:  Married with two terrors (oops! I meant teenagers)

Current training:  Going to the gym for various swim, stationery bike, treadmill workouts.

2010 Races:  Probably the Calloway Garden Sprint in June with a friend

2009 Race:  Tri 2 Remember

I am looking for some motivation as I mostly just train by myself.

Thanks!

Hi Melody!  I'd love to have you join.

Nice to have you back after injuries.  I'm happy to help motivate.

Congrats on finishing your tri last year!  One thing that gets posted here a lot is DFL > DNF > DNS.  Which is dead f***ing last is better than not finishing and both are better than not starting at all.  What's important is that you're out there and doing it!

Hi Jen,

I'd like to join your group. Finishing a sprint tri has been on my list for a long time. I get part of the way in my training then lose momentum.

I'm lucky that there's a small gym close by that has cycling classes. The bike is the hardest of the three for me, which isn't to say the swimming or running are much better. So I have a good place to get in some training this winter. There's a master swim class that meets really early in the morning that I want to join. Just getting there in time will be a challenge. And Dave and I are doing the sprint to 5k, though not real consistently. I live in the Seattle area and usually don't have a problem with doing my run/walk training outside.

I would also like to lose some weight, 40 to 50 lbs. It'll come off if I exercise regularly.

I know I can finish a sprint, which is my goal, if I do the training. Consistency is my weak spot and my goal this winter. I'd love to be a part of your group so we can cheer each other on. Also take advantage of your experience! I'm not an athlete by any stretch but can usually keep up. We'll see, now that I've hit my 50s.

Welcome to the group, Mary!

I honestly don't really think of myself as an athlete, so don't feel like that is a pre-requisite for being a triathlete!  I really believe that anyone can do it if they want to.  I'm here to help with the motivation and keeping going in the winter.

One of the things that really helps me is to have a long-term goal to work for.  Lots of times, it's a race, but it can also be something like "run 5 miles continuously".  It encourages me to get out there and work!

I've never done a master's swim class, but I know many people who have and they love them.  It's a great way to challenge yourself and learn from other swimmers.

Hi Jen would love to join the group.  Just started training in Oct. and I am loving it.  I am sidelined at the moment with running do to a knee issue that I am going to a doctor tomorrow to see what is going on, but I am still biking and swimming..
Name: Chris (TRIMAN413)
Story:   Right out of high school I raced road bikes for 3 years averaging 200 miles/week.  I got married and kind of fell out of it.  I have done a little here and there and I have tried running several times.  I would always end up getting hurt.  Triathlons have always intrigued me.  I started training in early October for triathlons.  I was doing great but I am having a knee issue again.  So I am going to the doctor tomoorow to see what is going on.

Family Status: married 14 year, 2 wonderful kids, boy10, girl 6.

Current Training: Currently training by gettint my base built back up.
2010 Races: Nothing definate yet.  I would like to start with some sprints and try to work up to an Olympic by fall.

2009 Races: none

Weightloss: I am 6'-1".  In October when I started I was a little over 200.  I am now at 188.  Would like to loose at least 18 more pounds.

Hi!  If there's room for me, I'd love to join your mentoring group!

I completed my first tri last season -- next year I'd like to do at least one sprint and one or two Olympic-distance tris.  I'm also trying to come back from IT band syndrome, which squashed my half-marathon dreams last fall, as well as drop the last 10-15 pounds of extra fat I'm carrying around with me (I have lost somewhere around 50 pounds since last January.)

I'd like to be in one of the mentoring groups because I do best when I am held accountable for doing (or not doing) my workouts -- sometimes I just need that kick in the butt

Hi Chris!  Welcome to the group!

Congratulations on the weight loss!

Hopefully, the doctor will figure out what's going on with your knee and you can get back to running soon.  It's always frustrating when you don't know what's going on.  Keep us posted!

Kat, there is definitely still room!  I'd love to have you.

ITB problems are so hard to deal with.  Are you doing any stretches or PT for them?  I have a few recommendations if you need them.

I'm here for cheering, motivation, and kicks in the butt if need be.
