Subject: Tris and tattoos
So here is my dilema, I have a large tattoo on my left arm so i can't get a number writtn on at tris. Im also thinking of getting a half sleeve on my right arm, but I wonder how this will affect my body markings for tris. Anyone else have a similar problem and solutions.

Quit doing triathlon and go the the nearest biker bar or rock concert where tatted up people belong.  Just kidding, just kidding, just kidding.  Don't anyone flame me.  It was seriously just a joke.  At least I found the thought funny when it sparked into my tiny brain. 
About your dilemma:  I wonder if you can wear some sort of light colored cuff or armband that can be written on.  It would be difficult to make sure it was secure for all 3 legs of the tri though.  Or maybe you can find a color of marker that will stand out over the tattoo and bring it with you to body marking.  I don't know if that is allowed.  I can't imagine why not.

I have a full sleeve, over shoulder to wrist on one arm, large tat on other upper arm. They basically just put my number over it because there is zero open skin on my right arm, and my left arm ends up more towards the back.

Ric that was hysterical. Last year they just wrote my number on my forearm but it was a really small triathlon so I don't think it was too strict.

Maybe you can get a race number tattooed on your arm and then just request that at races!  This just inspired me to tattoo an age on my calf and then never get any older.

I see plenty of racers that wait to get their race number on, then put on the sunscreen so the number 'rubs' and basically becomes unreadable.  Don't think the race number being viewable in the overall scheme of things will be that important, maybe more so for getting photos of yourself identified by the race photographers if you pin on number isn't showing.

Take you own pen/marker   and have you arm mark with a contrasting color like maybe PINK!

They aren't mandatory to be read or anything. 

It's just so that they know which pieces go back together after the shark feeding frenzy.*

I never had a problem. Between your race chip, your race # and the markings on every other limb, you should be good to go.

You could always buy a new pair of white DeSoto arm coolers for every race and write the # on there.

Dan's right - they'll stick it wherever they can. Plus, some races will mark your thighs too, or the tops of your hands, etc. If you've got your race number in a few other places on your body (including your non-tatted arm), you're good. I body-marked once at a race, and had to mark a few guys with REALLY hairy arms...nothing you can do there but just write it over all the hair. It's fine. If you're really concerned, you could write it on your swim cap too.

A big fat Sharpie will still be visible over most tattoos.  And who cares if it isn't?  As mentioned, hair, sweat, sunscreen, wetsuits, etc will all render the number unreadable anyways.  The arm numbers are for photo reasons and because of tradition, they serve no real purpose.  The chip on your ankle gives your time.
