So I've heard of people swimming with their Garmin 305's- putting them in a plastic baggie underneath your swim cap?  Anyone have any experience with this?  I want to be able to know EXACTLY where I am time-wise when I get out of the water, but I don't want to ruin my GPS, either.  Any suggestions?

I asked the same question a couple of months ago. The overwhelming response I got was to keep the Garmin out of the water. So I never tried.

What about the chess strap?  I'd like to put that one before my tri suit & wetsuit so I'm not fumbling around with it in T1.  Will the strap handle the water for the swim portion?

chest strap is fine in the water. I do this all the time.

I've done it several times during races and in training OWS. Initially, I didn't even use a zip-lock bag and just stuffed it under my cap. 4 years later, my 305 is still going strong (although I did have to re-glue the 2 halves together).

I double bag the 305 and place it on the crown of my head so the antenna is facing up when my head would be normally swimming. Then, I put on my goggles with their straps holding the 305 in place. Top it off with the swim cap and you're good to go.

Oh, I usually let a bit of air in the bags and put my contact info inside incase it gets knocked off my head. I'm really more worried about losing the 305 than I am it dying from water.

ETA: I've never tried it, but I bet if you wore your chest strap backwards (ie on your back), you'd get decent HR data as well.
