Subject: how do u set up for the transition?
I am doing my first triathalon in August and am wondering how the transition areas get set up.  Do you set your bike and shoes up yourself and how to do you get your cap, googles, wetsuit, bike and cycling shoes back??

Thanks for any information you can provide.

You do everything yourself, set it up in such a way that its easy for you to change, and try not to encroach in your neighbors space. Best would be to try it at home first, see what works best and do  it the same way during your race. As this is your first race, don't stress to much about if, there will be many more. Enjoy the race, look at what some of the other athletes and take it from there.

the only thing in transition for me is my bike, with bike shoes attached, running shoes and helmet under. If its a longer race, my sunglasses and a gel for the run.

There's a ton of youtube videos on setting up transition - some entertaining, some informative, but they can give you and idea of things that you need to think about. I just searched for "triathlon transition" and found a bunch of stuff.

Usually the swim/bike (T1) and bike/run (T2) transitions are in the same place, so you set everything up in one spot, do your transitions and leave your stuff there, and after you finish the run (finish is usually also near the transition area) you go back and pick up all of your stuff.

A few races do have a "point-to-point" bike ride so T1 and T2 are in different places.  If that's the case with your race, the race director will provide instructions on how you get all your stuff back.

If you're running your first race in August, you might think about volunteering at a race before then.  Volunteering usually gets you access to the transition area where spectators aren't allowed to go.  I did that before my first race and learned a ton.

Here is an easy depiction of what I do.

First find a good landmark by the bike racks so you can refer to it after comming out of the water

-Rack Bike
-Helmet w/chin strap unclipped and laying in aerobars w/sunglasses inside helmet
-Off to the right or left just a tad lay a towel nothing to HUGE but just enough
-Place Race Belt Under Running Shoes so it won't blow away
-Depending on the race rules bike shoes clipped into pedals with straps open and ready to go
-If flying mounts are not your thing then Bike Shoes on the front half of your towel straps open ready to go
-Nutrition depending on course is on your bike or tape gels to top tube

That is pretty much it in a nut shell make transition area as simple as you can. It's a very crowded space so less is more.

Another thing I do is use the craziest neon looking towel I can find it helps with locating your spot when comming out of the water too.

Here's the setup from my last race. Sorry about the blurriness, but the sun wasn't up yet and I didn't want to blind the other athletes with a flash.

Helmet on aerobars with sunglasses ready to go. Hand towel down by bike shoes. I wipe off the bottom of my feet while I put on sunglasses and helmet. Then put on bike shoes and go.

Running shoes and race belt are on the other side. (I mount the bike by the nose of the saddle when coming back in - always keeps my bike moving forward and I never have to worry about getting it under the rack)

pay attention to the rules & instructions for the race, not all races are the same !

here's a example video on transition area that's pretty good:

I don't want to broadcast my newbi-ness to the whole field of competitors, so rather than use the cheap plastic buckets from a local w-mart, can you tell me where I can get a carbon-reinforced 'trans-zone' bucket, the ones with a titanium handle??

I used to take a bright orange bucket and after I get my wetsuit off I put it on my head. I stopped doing that because it just seemed to get in the way.

Actually I think this is a great question. It is how I found Beginner Triathlete. The night before I was to do my first triathlete thing, I realized I had no idea how to go from one sport to another and how to set it all up. To this day I am grateful for the helpful advice. However, I'm not sure about the one guy who told me I was suppose to wear a bucket on my head in transitions.

I usually let my location on the rack and how crowded it is dictate my exact setup, BUT I usually follow the same format.

Bike stuff is on the front of my transition towel (t-towel), run stuff towards the back.

Helmet and sunglasses on the bike with the strap of my helmet through the straw on me aero bottle so it won't fall off.  The only thing that always stays the same is my t-towel.  I have been using a shamwow for years now and it has become m good luck charm
