Heard some back and forth opinions about this race and it's organizer(s).  Looking at this one for my 1st Oly.  I'm not very demanding, but would like a decently run race.  Any comments appreciated.

They've done olympic distance races at that site & have it down pretty well, so I wouldn't be concerned about it. I think most of the people that are being cautious about signing up are talking about the HIM distance.

good to know...this will be my first oly race too.  I was a bit concerned about all the negative comments I've seen in the past.

just be aware that it's advertized as a 1500 yard swim, not meters, and they admit to cutting the swim leg short.

Thanks for that info.  In a couple more years that will probably irk me, but for now...ANY swim before my bike and run is challenge enough! Sealed

Any idea why they short it...looks like they got plenty of lake to work with?!?

2008 TXMAN was my 1st sprint, and it went great. Check-in, transition, no problems; course was good.  No complaints at all.  Hoping/planning on attempting the Oly this year.

Thinking about signing up for the HIM.  According to my "extensive" research (Google Maps, Satellite View) it looks like a pretty cool course. Another guy from my Tri club is driving up.  Can any of you DFW folks talk about the lake? Clean? Clear? Big water moccasins?

You know of any lakes in north Texas that are clean and clear? Ha.

It's an average north Texas lake. I don't consider it any better or worse than the rest.

i'll be doing the Oly distance at this race. signed up last week. i haven't done this EXACT race but i've done numerous DA tris in the last 4 yrs. at the very least, they have many yrs of experience and if you aren't anal about the tiny details you'll likely have no complaints.

the annoying things to me are the distances they claim on their races.  i just raced in the CaveMan sprint tri and the bike course was easily off by 2 full miles (13.7 vs their claimed 11.6) (verified on 3 cyclocomputers and 2 GPS watches).  having to cycle the extra 2 miles doesn't bother me, but generally i pace myself and change my cadence near the end of the bike course and when i start said change at 10miles into the bike, i'll be holding that for twice as long as i anticipated.

and their open water swim courses do generally come up short of the claimed distance.

I did this race a few years ago and had a good time then found out we had taken a short cut on the swim... They just had too much going on that day Sprint, Oly, Half, Aquabike, all at the same time.

FWIW, the PDFs on the Caveman site said 12.8 miles, not 11.6. My Garmin came up with 13.2.

Question for those who have done Texas Man in the past ... How is the traffic trying to get into the park the day of the race? I was thinking about hauling the camper out there and spending the weekend in the park with the family, that way I dont have to get up and get out so early in the morning the day of the race.

Does anyone else plan on camping out in the park the night before?

I've never camped out there before so I won't speak to that, but I will say that the traffic backup for the event doesn't seem appreciably worse than most any other triathlon I've done. Of course, I'm speaking as a racer, not someone who may be spectating. If memory serves, they close off the entrance of the park after a certain time, so any spectators should probably come with you instead of showing up later.

On Saturday, I rode a loop of the Texas Man bike course.  Much of the road has new chip seal.  The shoulders are smooth but covered in gravel (from the chip seal).  Hopefully DSU gets the street sweepers out to clean the shoulders.  Hemming road has not been repaved and is a mess of pot holes and cracks.  This section is really bad; be careful here.

I'm not doing the race.  I was out there with some athletes doing a reconnaissance ride and thought I would pass on some info.

Got this as a reply to my question, if they are going to sweep the roads.

We are going to sweep the roads but there will be areas where you ride on the right side of the road by the white line... If you can ride on the shoulder that is great. Otherwise stay on as close to the shoulder of the road as possible...

Thanks.
