Subject: The Brits - lighter sideNow there's a stickied thread that takes quite a serious tone regarding the recent bombings in London. I didn't want to take away from that tone with some of the more cheery things that came to mind while thinking about Britian. I get to interact with a few colleagues located in Oldham which is near Manchester. There's a ton of things that I get a good laugh when I'm around this guy, whose name is Dave, age 60. ....for starters.... Shagging in the US refers to a type of dancing. Shagging in the UK refers to doing the horizontal tango with someone of the fairer sex. When Dave read in the paper that there is a shag club and free shag lessons being held at a local hotel, his eyes nearly popped out of his head. Dave has shared his theory of World Domination throughout the centuries....he says, "All nations that have ever had some type of empire in the history of the world have either developed the technology to make beer, or tea". So, I ask, "Why beer and tea?". He goes on to say in total 100% seriousness and said in a matter of fact tone...."Its the antiseptic properties of both drinks that helps to kill germs. Especially when in foreign lands." He drinks more beer than tea. LOL! I spoke with him on the phone on the 1st of July. We got around to talking about the 4th of July...aka Independence from Britain day. Again, he says with that dead pan tone, "you know....I think we really won that one." I was trapped in England during the Sept 11 terrorist attacks, and actually flew on Sept 10th. We were in London Gatwick airport on Sept 14th hoping that US airspace would soon be opening back up when they came over the public address system and had a 2 min moment of silence. Its a memory I'll take with me to my grave...Gatwick so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. During this tragedy, you could see on the face of everyone the same sadness and resolve that people in the US were feeling. Truly an ally the Brits are. |
