jailbreaking iPhone and iPod touches

i've heard that... every time Apple upgrades the Itunes/Device hardware it locks it back down..

Providing that you do not need to have the latest release on the first day jailbreaking and unlocking the phone is fairly a quick and painless process

That being said, you do have to be careful about updating the phone through itunes as you have to assume that any update from apple will brick your phone and render it useless until you can go through the jailbreak/unlock process again so it is a good idea not to update until you know that the pwnage tool has been updated.

I have not jailbroken my phone, only because I don't really feel I need to.

That said, JB has come a long way since the 3G.
It's fairly easy, and the developers tend to come out with updates pretty quick. Plus Apple isn't putting otu software updates as often as they used to.

WRT warranty, you can just reset your phone to factory default and there's no record it was ever jailbroken.

I jailbroke my phone prior to my vacation to Disney.  10 dollars a day for internet was not worth it.  Jailbroke the phone, pretty simple to do then downloaded MyWi and voila, Internet tethering was available.  All very simple and if I need to reset it back to normal I only need to plug it into iTunes and run the latest update.

It's easy to do any really does not perm damage.  However both times I've done it the phone has been a bit quirky and apps crashed a lot.  I have restored my phone and have not looked back.

Same thing happened to my kid.  It was fun and cool for while but his itouch crashed so bad we had to go to the Apple store to restore it.  He hasn't even bothered to think about it again.

OK, I am going to ask what does jailbreaking do?

I also have a question. If the iPhone is so great already, why the need to jailbreak?

It is pretty straight forward now especially.  There are some quirks with iOS 4, but it still works.

Main reasons before were to get multitasking (run pandora in the background while surfing)
A second is to allow tethering, now that Apple will do it, but charges a fee, I agree with the above, if I am traveling and somewhere that makes you pay for internet, its a good way to tether. 

There are some apps that have not been approved by Apple and being jailbroken allows you to use them through Cydia downloads.  It runs from some small things like additional points in games that the apple store would normally charge money for, to rebuilding the interface:

My favorite was the weather icon displaying the current temp not 73 like it normally does
I also liked the app (Intelliscreen) that ports email to the lock screen similar to a blackberry so you can browse without unlocking or even just the new mail icon near the battery indicator
